A place between Pavese, wine and rolling hills

A holiday apartment in Santo Stefano Belbo is a good fit for a trip that combines culture, landscapes and culinary discoveries. The town offers historic landmarks, paths for walks and longer tours, as well as local wine production featuring Moscato d’Asti and Asti Spumante DOCG. At the same time, the variety of trail lengths and experiences allows you to plan varied days without committing to just one way of travelling.

Discover culture and literary traces

The medieval tower is the only surviving tangible evidence of Santo Stefano Belbo’s original settlement and the castle that once stood there. Other notable buildings include the deconsecrated Church of Santi Giacomo e Cristoforo. It was built between the late 13th and early 14th centuries and is now home to the auditorium of the Cesare Pavese Foundation. San Gaudenzio Abbey was founded by Benedictine monks in the Romanesque style before the year 1000.

You can also encounter Cesare Pavese in public spaces: Santo Stefano Belbo has literary benches shaped like books, featuring passages from his works. The Museo a Cielo Aperto di Camo displays more than 90 works along the streets of Camo, a hamlet of Santo Stefano Belbo. Since 2013, this museum has hosted more than 400 artists from all over Italy. Guided tours of the Pavese sites are available on request for individuals, organised groups, schools and companies, led by specialised guides. They last around two hours and can also be conducted in English or German on request.

Trails through Belbo and the hilly landscape

For active days, the Sentieri Pavesiani offer 15 trails, including their variants, with a total length of around 60 kilometres. The trails vary in difficulty: some run along the Belbo, while others continue as long ridge routes with views over the hilly landscape. The Multimedia Outdoor Museum adds five themed routes suitable for walks. The accompanying app guides visitors from the starting point of each route and provides notifications when they are near the totems.

The Grande Traversata delle Langhe also offers various options for planning your day. It comprises 17 stages, or 34 stages including the variants, and is intended for hiking, cycling and the use of environmentally friendly means of transport. The Belbo floodplain is the only non-hilly area within the territory of Santo Stefano Belbo. This makes it possible to combine different landscape impressions: riverside paths contrast with long ridge routes offering views across the hills.

Market, wine and a distinctive annual rhythm

The weekly market in Santo Stefano Belbo has been held in Piazza Umberto I for more than three centuries. Local wine production includes, in particular, Moscato d’Asti and Asti Spumante DOCG. Another notable date is 4 August: on this day each year, the signal to light the bonfires that illuminate the surrounding hills is sent from the Sanctuary of Madonna della Neve.

When choosing your holiday apartment in Santo Stefano Belbo, the mix you want of culture, walks, longer tours and regional culinary experiences may therefore be decisive. Those who prefer literary sites and architectural history will find several different themes for planning their days. Those who would rather be outdoors can choose between walking routes, varied Sentieri Pavesiani and the stages of the Grande Traversata delle Langhe. The variety of landscapes and experiences makes Santo Stefano Belbo a destination that can be discovered in a different way each time, depending on your personal pace of travel.
