Rotello: Palazzo Colavecchio, defensive walls and historic center

Palazzo Colavecchio dominates the historic center of Rotello. The complex evolved from a defensive structure into a noble residence surrounded by defensive walls, with a small tower for observation. The palazzo is currently inaccessible as a result of the earthquakes of October 2002.

Fontana Maggiore and churches with their own history in Rotello

The Fontana Maggiore is a fountain made entirely of bronze, approximately 3.50 meters high. A statue of Ceres, the goddess of fields, harvests and fertility, stands on the central pedestal. It symbolizes the strong importance that agriculture held for local activities at the time. Olive growing is also one of Rotello’s agricultural traditions.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli was built between 1728 and 1744 in place of an earlier church dedicated to the Annunciation. It is designed in the Baroque style and has three naves and a central dome. The church is open at all times during the day.

The Church of San Rocco also leads to another chapter in the town’s history. It was founded in 1648 as a votive church after the severe plague epidemic of 1646 to 1648. It was restored in 1913 and reopened for worship the following year.

Olive oil and traditional cuisine: varieties, dishes and fireworks

Several olive varieties are cultivated in Rotello. Their processing produces high-quality extra virgin olive oil, known and appreciated both in the region and beyond for its organoleptic, or sensory, properties. The cultivation of different varieties and local processing shape the town’s culinary identity.

Traditional dishes associated with Rotello include fusilli a cappelletti, cacaurozze and fiadoni. The Sagra dell'Olio Novello combines the tasting of freshly pressed extra virgin olive oil and traditional dishes with a fireworks display. At the festival, oil, cuisine and festivities come together.

Walks and creative activities: Tratturo, olive grove and Il Giardino

Near the S. Andrea–Biferno branch of the tratturo, there are numerous opportunities for outdoor excursions and walks. This gives the landscape around Rotello its own place alongside the buildings and cuisine.

Il Giardino organizes artistic projects and cultural events. Il Giardino also offers experience tours with tastings of local products and runs workshops on making homemade pasta.

Mappitella Picnic tra gli ulivi is a shared nature experience featuring a walk through a centuries-old olive grove. The olive grove connects the outdoor walk with the theme that also shapes Rotello’s oil production.
