Holiday apartment in Campodipietra: Churches, Festivals and Local History

Campodipietra combines a largely medieval settlement with church art and recurring festivals. The parish church of San Martino is part of the medieval historic centre; Santa Maria in Valle and the Cappella di Sant’Antonio are located in the Campodipietra area.

Church art and architectural history in the medieval historic centre

The historic settlement of Campodipietra largely preserves the characteristics of a medieval village that developed around the parish church of San Martino.

The Parrocchia San Martino Vescovo is a Baroque church built in 1770 near one of the three gates in Campodipietra’s medieval ring of walls. Its apse contains five paintings from 1774 by the Molisan painter Paolo Gamba. They depict the Immaculate Conception and the four Evangelists.

The cylindrical bell tower of the Parrocchia San Martino Vescovo also tells of older layers of construction: it was built on the tower of an old baronial palace that once had a richly decorated onion dome.

The Chiesa San Bonaventura is a Romanesque church on Piazza Rimembranza. After suffering severe damage in the 1688 earthquake, it was rebuilt in 1700 and reconsecrated in 1705 by Cardinal Vincenzo Orsini. Visitors who view sacred architecture through its architectural forms can compare San Martino and San Bonaventura in Campodipietra. The Baroque parish church near the ring of walls thus stands opposite a Romanesque church on Piazza Rimembranza.

Access to the Ex Palazzo Ducale is through the main entrance at Piazza San Martino Vescovo 8. Number 8 provides a fixed point of orientation for accessing the Ex Palazzo Ducale.

Chapels, processions and fixed dates in the municipal area

Outside the densely built historic centre lies the rural Chiesa di Santa Maria in Valle in the hamlet of Civitella, in the Campodipietra area. It was probably originally a funerary chapel. Santa Maria in Valle is therefore located outside the densely built historic centre in the hamlet of Civitella.

Every September, a procession takes place along the road leading to the Chiesa di Santa Maria in Valle. Music and entertainment evenings are also held at the Chiesa di Santa Maria in Valle in September. Those who choose September as their travel period will find both the processional route and the music and entertainment evenings at Santa Maria in Valle.

The Cappella di Sant’Antonio is located in the Campodipietra area, in Contrada San Pietro. Every year on 13 June, the feast of Saint Anthony is celebrated at the chapel. The Feast of Saint Anthony on 13 June is a separate festival date at the Cappella di Sant’Antonio.

A route through the outlying areas

The Tratturo Lucera-Castel di Sangro also runs through the outlying areas of Campodipietra. Those interested in landscapes can take the route of the Tratturo Lucera-Castel di Sangro through Campodipietra’s outlying areas into account.
