Holiday apartment in Montegrimano – Culture, Trails and Landscapes
Monte Grimano Terme is situated on a spur above the Conca Valley at an altitude of around 600 metres. A holiday apartment in Montegrimano is therefore particularly appealing if you would like to combine a distinctive elevated location, a historic town centre and excursions into the countryside.
Thermal character and historic traces
The thermal park of Monte Grimano Terme is currently closed. The hydrotherapy centre uses alkaline, saline-bromine-iodine and sulphurous healing waters that rise on the slopes of nearby Monte S. Paolo; the centre is currently temporarily closed. The town’s thermal character is therefore just as much a part of its appearance as its historic buildings.
Churches, castle and civic history
In its historic centre, Monte Grimano Terme has a spiral-shaped urban layout of medieval origin. The Torre Civica was built in the 14th century as part of a castle fortified by the Montefeltro family. The Chiesa di San Silvestro was built at the end of the 18th century based on a design by Cosimo Morelli.
The parish church of Chiesa di San Silvestro preserves eight large-format paintings from the 17th to the 19th century. It also contains an organ with almost 500 pipes, catalogued as cultural heritage of the Marche region. At the entrance to the town stands the residence of the Massaioli family, built in the 17th century and now serving as the town hall; its entrance staircase, a fireplace, vaulted cellar structures and an icehouse have been preserved.
The church of San Giovanni Battista in Montetassi also adds to the historic character: it originally belonged to the Romanesque small churches of the Conca Valley and can probably be dated to the 12th century. The Cippo di Garibaldi commemorates the military leader’s passage through the area in 1849.
Walks and circular trail
The Cippo di Garibaldi lies among woods and hills and is a destination for walks and trekking. A panoramic promenade was opened along the walls of the Borgo in June 2014. Thus, alongside the buildings, trails offering different landscape impressions are also a focal point when you choose your accommodation as a starting point for active and more relaxing days of holiday.
The Giro del Monte San Lorenzo starts in Monte Grimano Terme and passes through Ca’ Secco. It is considered a 15.7-kilometre circular route for mountain biking and trekking. Good fitness is required for the mountain-bike tour, while the route is also considered suitable for every level. You should take these differing details into account when planning your individual tour, especially when several interests and fitness levels come together.
Monte San Lorenzo and regional events
The Osservatorio Astronomico Monte San Lorenzo is located on the southern slope of Monte San Lorenzo at 536 metres above sea level. It can be reached via the SP130 provincial road, which connects the valley of the Conca River with the valley of the Foglia River. When choosing a holiday apartment in Montegrimano, this connection with Monte San Lorenzo provides additional orientation between local history, landscapes and excursion destinations.
Monte Grimano Terme is associated in July with the Sagra del tartufo nero and in August with Il Borgo in festa – La buona carne del Montefeltro. Both dates give the town’s annual cycle its own culinary and community-oriented character.
