Holiday apartment in Cuccurano – History along the Via Flaminia
Cuccurano combines sacred sites, industrial heritage and very early written records. If you are planning a holiday apartment stay in Cuccurano, the character of the place can be understood through different historical layers: from the ancient Via Flaminia and the Metauro Valley to churches, brickworks and small memorial markers along the roadside.
Landscape along the Via Flaminia
Along the ancient Via Flaminia in the Fano area, gently rolling hills covered with vineyards and olive groves, as well as the fertile Metauro Valley, are considered defining features of the landscape. For your travel planning, this setting offers a clear focus if you would like to combine your stay with the regional landscape, cultural history and the development of the transport corridor. The Via Flaminia is interesting not only as a historical name, but also as a reference point for the various traces that Cuccurano has preserved over the centuries.
Churches with different histories
The Chiesa del Crocifisso is located on the Via Flaminia opposite Cuccurano’s public park.
San Biagio is the patron saint of Cuccurano and is regarded as the protector of the throat. The parish church of San Biagio, together with its rectory, was once located in Ferretto and was moved from there to Cuccurano in 1925; the associated rectory was moved as well.
Bricks, lime and industrial archaeology
Cuccurano’s connection with brickworks can be traced back to the 15th century. The decisive factor was the locally available clay, which was suitable for brick production. In addition to masonry bricks, the Cuccurano brickworks also produced handcrafted decorated vases and architectural terracotta elements, including moulded brackets, balustrades, rosettes and cornice elements.
The Fornacione was built in the second half of the 19th century for lime production and, despite its restoration, is part of the area’s industrial archaeology. Together with the brickworks, it represents a part of local construction and production history that clearly differs from the sacred themes of the area.
Small details and undetermined dates
The Madonna di Loreto niche has a shell-shaped apse and contains a small sandstone statue of the Madonna di Loreto. Based on collected testimonies, its installation is estimated to date from the beginning of the 20th century; the exact date is unknown.
Traces from the Middle Ages and transport history
The existence of a castrum in Cuccurano is documented in a deed issued by Frederick I in 1177. Cuccurano is mentioned as fundo Cucuriano in a document from 1054 (?) and in a deed of donation from 1116. The former Fano–Urbino railway line is also part of the history of the place: Cuccurano served there as one of twelve intermediate stations.
On the SS2 Flaminia, at kilometre 278, there is an old milestone that is partially buried in the concrete of newer structures.
