Appignano combines local history with ceramics and landscape. The Via dei Vasai tells the story of Appignano’s centuries-old ceramic tradition through old kilns, master craftspeople and artistic innovation. Appignano is still surrounded by characteristic town walls. Alongside the ceramic tradition, the town walls remain the second visible hallmark of the town.

Workshops and museums for curious explorers

The Scuola di Ceramica in Appignano offers courses and workshops open to everyone. In the “Una giornata al tornio” workshop, participants make a small clay object, which is then fired in a kiln and kept as a souvenir. The experience includes both working with the clay and the subsequent firing process through to the finished souvenir. The activity is suitable for all age groups; children aged six and over may take part when accompanied. The MArC – Museo dell’Arte della Ceramica also features a museum route on Roman ceramic and brick production, with significant finds from Collina del Sole. The second tour, “Le cocce de Pignà. Il mistero primitivo”, presents the “cocce” and “coccià” traditions of Appignano.

Churches, works of art and traces of the past

The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista has an 18th-century structure, a Gothic bell tower and preserves traces of the 1443 fortifications. The Chiesa di Santa Tecla houses the Cappella dei Santi and an ornate 19th-century reliquary shrine containing five thousand relics. In San Giovanni Battista, traces from 1443 stand alongside the 18th-century structure; Santa Tecla adds the 19th-century reliquary shrine to this chronological sequence. At the Convento di Forano, part of a 15th-century fresco of the Annunciation is still visible around an old oak door traditionally associated with Saint Francis. A hospice stood in the area of the Convento di Forano between the 12th and 13th centuries; there were probably also Benedictine settlements there. The Opera del Bellente is a painted ceramic work depicting Pietro Masi as Bellente, who resisted Napoleon’s conscription.

Out and about along the Monocchia

The Sentiero del Coppo follows the course of the Monocchia through spontaneous vegetation and past scenic landscapes. The Fontana di Borgo XX Settembre is accessible by car; free parking and reserved spaces for people with disabilities are available. Blue mosaics and colourful ceramic tiles, made by Appignano’s master potters, decorate the fountain. With its sculptures, amphorae and jugs, the Fontana di Borgo XX Settembre resembles a small open-air gallery.
