Sefro offers various ways to spend a day of your holiday: hiking through impressive landscapes, gaining insights into the history of the village or enjoying regional trout dishes.

Nature between high plateau and water

The Valle della Scurosa offers hiking trails, including a path to the Bocchetta della Scurosa. From there, you can enjoy views of the Piani di Colfiorito and the Monti Sibillini. The Altopiano di Montelago offers a different landscape experience. Located at an altitude of around 1,000 metres, it combines high biodiversity, impressive panoramas and wetland habitats. In winter, its sinkholes fill with water and form small frozen lakes.

Hiking trails with a special history

You can reach the Grotte Beato Bernardo via an easy 20-minute walk. The path follows the stream and the signs placed along the route. The Sentiero Francescano is a hiking trail connecting Pioraco with Sefro and following in the footsteps of Saint Francis of Assisi. Blessed Bernardo, Saint Francis’s first companion, lived in exile for more than two years in the caves of Sefro. Here, hiking brings nature, the experience of the trail and Franciscan history together directly.

Waterfall, churches and museums

The Cascata dello Scarzito is easy to see at the entrance to Sefro. The waterfall on the Scarzito River was formerly used by the Valle Eremita monastery to power a mill. In the centre of Sefro, the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta stands at the junction of Strada Provinciale 97 and Piazza Bellanti. It was probably built between 1887 and 1893 on the remains of the 11th-century Pieve di Santa Maria. Madonna dei Calcinari dates from the 15th century and contains numerous votive frescoes, some of which are attributed to Girolamo di Giovanni.

The Museo della Civiltà Contadina “Florindo Ferretti” is housed in the Castello dei Da Varano. It displays agricultural and craft tools as well as evidence of work in the upper Potenza Valley during the 20th century. The Museo Naturalistico Didattico e della Cultura AgroSilvoPastorale is located in the former school building in Sorti and provides insights into rural life in the past, natural resources, agricultural work, traditions, wood gathering and charcoal production.

Trout and regional cuisine

At the Laghetto di Pesca Sportiva di Sefro, you can fish for trout by paying an admission fee to the operators. The fish weigh between 300 and 3,500 grams. For a quick meal, La Nicchia dei Sapori is a good option: a small bottega with tables. It offers Norcineria products, organic products, savoury pies, trout dishes and Crescia fogliata, representing the traditions of Sefro. In August, the Sagra della Trota puts trout, the symbol of Sefro, at the centre of attention; there is also music, food and drink.
