Holiday apartment in Molino: Discover mill history and culture
Molino between mill history and the Potenza Valley
Molino combines a documented history of milling with cultural and archaeological experiences in the surrounding region. In 1881, the Natalini brothers acquired an existing grain mill; the present-day building of Molino Natalini was completed in 1890. This gives the town a tangible connection to a past that can be explored not only through dates, but also through distinctive buildings, museums and archaeological traces.
The Torre del Mulino di Monte Milone
The Torre del Mulino di Monte Milone is considered one of the most significant examples of fortified mills in the Potenza Valley and served to control the passage of travellers and goods along the valley. The tower is located in the municipality of Pollenza, near the Potenza River. Its square ground plan stands on a sloping base; the fortified complex comprises three above-ground floors in addition to the roof level.
For orientation on site, the tower’s structural situation is particularly important: the attached residential buildings from the 19th century block the main entrance, which can only be accessed from inside the attached building sections. The roof of the tower and the presumably existing crenellation have been completely lost. Above the bricked-up tracery window with a pointed arch, the municipal coat of arms of the former Monte Milone is still visible.
Holiday apartment in Molino: culture and history in the surrounding area
Sacred art and civic collections also add to the picture. The Abbazia di Santa Maria di Rambona dates back to the 9th century and preserves a Romanesque crypt with five small aisles. These are divided by Roman columns with Romanesque capitals. In Pollenza, the Museo Civico in Palazzo Cento displays a collection of paintings, local ceramics, antique furniture and archaeological finds. The exhibits include Roman mosaics and statues discovered in Montefrancolo.
Pollenza itself provides another concrete point of reference for exploring local history with its three entrance gates – Porta del Colle, Porta Santa Croce and Porta Nuova. In the wider region surrounding Molino, the medieval castle of Castel Franco stood on Monte Franco between around the 10th and 11th centuries. An archaeological settlement dating from the Iron Age to the Roman imperial period has also been documented on the same Monte Franco. The Grotte del Diavolo complete this range of sites: they are two prehistoric caves above the Potenza Valley that were used as burial sites with evidence of burning.
Cycling route and thematic travel planning
For active days, there is a specific historical connection along the cycling route “Ciclovia del Chienti e Potenza > Giro: POLLENZA - TREIA”. On the descent towards Passo di Treia lies the ancient necropolis of Montefranco. Those choosing a holiday apartment in Molino can therefore focus their trip on these themes: architectural history and sacred architecture, museums and archaeology, or a cycling stage with a historical connection.
