Calcata Vecchia: holiday apartment between tuff and the Treja Valley

Calcata Vecchia is situated on the tip of an approximately circular tuff promontory that extends over the valley of the Treja River and lies on its right-hand orographic side.

The special access to the historic centre

The characteristic entrance to Calcata Vecchia is accessible exclusively on foot. It follows an S-shaped course, is carved into the natural tuff and is partly reinforced by massive walls. The first section of the Sentiero Ceciuli is accessible with a pushchair; the entrance to the town is accessible exclusively on foot.

Churches, tabernacles and the Palazzo Baronale

In the Chiesa del Santissimo Nome di Gesù, you will encounter two clearly identifiable testimonies to the town’s history. The church was probably built by the Anguillara family in the first half of the 13th century. Set into its wall is a gilded marble tabernacle from the late 15th century.

The Palazzo “Baronale” degli Anguillara is the result of modernisations commissioned in the 18th century by the Sinibaldi family, the lords of the town. The palazzo is currently owned by the Valle del Treja Regional Park and serves as the institution’s administrative headquarters as well as a cultural space.

Rural culture in the former church of San Giovanni

The former church of San Giovanni houses a collection of tools and equipment from rural culture. The collection of the Museo della Civiltà Contadina comprises around 500 carefully restored objects. Particularly important agricultural objects include tools used for processing hemp.

Art in the woods and alleyways

Opera Bosco in Località Colle in Calcata is an experimental museum-laboratory for contemporary art and extends across three hectares of woodland within the Parco Valle del Treja near Calcata. In addition, you can experience street artists performing in Calcata’s alleyways and watch craftspeople at work in their workshops.

Gorges and protected area in the Treja Valley

The Parco Naturale Regionale Valle del Treja is a protected area covering 628 hectares in the municipalities of Calcata and Mazzano Romano. In the Treja Valley, the waters have carved deep, branching gorges into the volcanic tuff.

Hiking trails with different focuses

The Sentiero Ceciuli begins in the historic centre of Calcata. Permanent sculptures made of local stone stand along the route, linking the natural environment and art during the walk.

The Anello Calcata - La Valle circular trail leads from Calcata into the Treja Valley, follows an appealing stretch along the Treja River and then climbs back to the starting point. Another option is the La via Narcense e i castelli route, which can also be travelled by bicycle and on horseback.
