Bagnoregio can be discovered through its geological history, sacred art and the distinctive shape of Civita.

Culture between fossils and sacred art

At the Museo Geologico e delle Frane, you can see a stratigraphically collected fossil collection of marine molluscs dating from the Pliocene to the early Pleistocene. The ancient structure of Porta Santa Maria, carved into the tuff, is of Etruscan origin. Natural history and early cultural history are therefore available as clearly distinct topics to explore.

The Chiesa di San Donato houses a famous and particularly valuable wooden crucifix from the 15th century, from the Flemish school. The church was built around the 6th century on the site of a pre-existing pagan temple. Only the basement and some fragments of wall remain of the original Casa Natale di San Bonaventura. The Concattedrale dei Ss. Nicola, Donato e Bonaventura houses an artistically crafted silver reliquary in the shape of a blessing arm, containing the bones of San Bonaventura’s arm.

Civita as the starting and finishing point

Porta Santa Maria is the only access to the village of Civita. Tickets for the village of Civita di Bagnoregio are available at the ticket offices. For every excursion route in the programme in the Valle dei Calanchi, the starting point and return are in the village of Civita di Bagnoregio.

Landscape of the Valle dei Calanchi

The cliff of Civita in the Valle dei Calanchi has a clay and clay-sandy marine-formed base layer; the layers above it consist of tuff and lava rock. The Museo Geologico di Civita is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during standard time and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during daylight saving time. The landscape and museum complement the visit with a geological perspective.

Traditions and technology

Other experiences include the Museo Taruffi in Bagnoregio, with vintage cars and a collection of minicars. The Processione del Venerdì Santo takes place annually in Bagnoregio. In Civita, the traditional Tonna racing event takes place during the patron-saint festivals in June and September. In this way, the impressions range from a technical collection piece to local customs.

Plan a holiday apartment stay around your interests

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Bagnoregio, you can first decide which themes should shape your trip. Museums and churches lead to culture and history, the cliff and the Valle dei Calanchi to geology, while the Processione and Tonna define the festival calendar. This allows you to base your choice of accommodation on specific ideas for things to see. For families, this variety can help combine shared discoveries and different interests during one stay.
