The necropolis of Vigna la Piazza is the oldest funerary complex, that is, a complex dedicated to burials, in Grotte di Castro. It developed between the end of the 8th and the 5th century BC on the northern side of the Civita plateau. The Etruscan Pianezze necropolis was used between the 7th and 5th centuries BC. It comprises at least 24 chamber tombs carved into the hill’s tuff terraces and associated with the Etruscan settlement of Civita. The Pianezze archaeological park has paths, barriers, and information panels.

Another distinctive complex is the necropolis of Centocamere. It extends across the entire face of the hill and has at least three superimposed burial levels following the natural course of a tuff slope. Together, these necropolises make the town’s long Etruscan heritage comprehensible through concrete burial structures and landscape forms.

Museo Civita: cultural focal point with current status

The Museo Civita presents Etruscan civilization through videos, film footage, reconstructions of tombs, and large-format photographs on the walls. Since March 28, 2025, the Museo Civita has been closed to the public due to renovation work on the palazzo. This status should be taken into account when planning your stay, alongside the other historic sites.
