Sabaudia combines a distinctive coastal landscape with lakes, a protected area, history and distinctive architecture. Those looking for a varied mix of beach, nature observation and culture for their holiday will find different opportunities here for spending time together. When choosing your holiday apartment or holiday home, you can therefore first consider whether the coast, the lakes, historic sites or discoveries in the Parco Nazionale del Circeo should be the main focus for you.

Coast and lakes as defining scenery

The Mare di Sabaudia offers 15 kilometres of fine sand. The beaches are bordered by a coastal dune approximately 200 metres wide. This landscape can be regarded as a focus of the holiday in its own right: a stay with plenty of time by the sea differs from a trip in which nature and cultural destinations determine the daily rhythm.

The Lago di Paola is another distinctive feature of the landscape. It forms part of a coastal lake and wetland complex designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. The lake is 6.7 kilometres long and separated from the Tyrrhenian Sea by a sand dune approximately 200 metres wide. Extensive production of clams, the so-called “vongola verace”, takes place along its shores. In addition to its significance as a landscape, Lago di Paola therefore also offers an interesting connection to regional products.

Experience nature and understand its connections

The main visitor centre of the Parco Nazionale del Circeo is located within Sabaudia’s built-up area. At the Centro Visitatori there, the Sentiero Natura leads to marked rest areas with information boards explaining the key characteristics of the forest’s wildlife and vegetation. Reconstructions of a “Lestra” and a charcoal kiln also illustrate the historical relationship between people and the park’s area.

Another way to access this history is the Centro di Documentazione sull'Istruzione e la Sanità nelle paludi pontine. It can be reached on foot or by bicycle via a forest path. Information boards there explain the relationship between people and the environment from prehistoric times to the present day. At the Museo Naturalistico del Parco Nazionale del Circeo, visitors can gain an overview of the protected area’s ecological and historical values across approximately 350 square metres. For families, this can become a day in which observing, reading and discovering together come naturally together.

Architecture, museums and historic sites

Sabaudia has preserved its original urban and architectural layout and is also known as the “Città del Razionalismo”. The Centro di Documentazione “Angiolo Mazzoni” is located in the city’s former post office building. The building was designed by the architect and engineer Angiolo Mazzoni. Today, the centre combines a historical, project-related and photographic archive with the “Feliciano Iannella” city library in order to document the history of Sabaudia and its surrounding area.

The Museo Civico del Mare e della Costa “Marcello Zei” also combines knowledge with an active form of visiting. An interactive tour includes practical observation tasks as well as small discovery activities and challenges. The museum also presents traces of prehistoric people who lived along the coast. Those wishing to interest younger visitors in the history of the landscape can incorporate such activities into their daily plans without limiting the stay to a single topic.

On the eastern shore of Lago di Sabaudia, the Parco archeologico della Villa di Domiziano is located within the Parco Nazionale del Circeo. The complex comprises three visible and well-preserved areas. The Santuario di Santa Maria della Sorresca stands on the shore of Lago di Paola and already existed before the 10th century. In the church of Santissima Annunziata, the “Cappella reale” commemorates a connection to Italian history: it was donated to the city of Sabaudia by Queen Margherita di Savoia in the 1930s and was originally located in the Palazzo Margherita in Rome.

Choose the right accommodation for your holiday

Accommodation in Sabaudia is particularly well suited to your plans if you would like to combine different interests. If you focus on the coast, the beach can provide the setting for relaxing days. If you are more interested in nature and history, the visitor centre, Sentiero Natura, museums and Villa di Domiziano take centre stage. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, therefore, consider above all which holiday rhythm suits your travel group and which topics you would like to discover locally.
