Ponza is a destination for visitors who want to combine coast, trails and history in the same trip. The sandy coast, bays, rocky towers and crystal-clear sea define the landscape. At the same time, Monte Guardia offers a special perspective on the town: at 280 metres above sea level, it is the highest point on Ponza. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can therefore first consider whether you want to focus on landscapes, culture or excursions on the water.

Trails with different focuses

The trails on Ponza lead to various landscape and cultural highlights. The Punta Fieno trail features aphorisms selected by the Ponzese poet Antonio De Luca. Punta Fieno is also home to centuries-old terraces planted with Biancolella vines. Those interested in the connection between the landscape and local history will find two different points of reference here.

The route to Monte Guardia is a mule track through vineyards and Mediterranean maquis. It runs above the Faro della Guardia. The Punta Incenso route leads to Montagnella. When planning your day, you can therefore choose between trails featuring vineyards, maquis, a connection to the lighthouse or a specific destination, without combining the experiences into a single route.

Roman Traces and Cultural Destinations

The historic sites also give Ponza its distinctive character. The Chiaia di Luna tunnel is one of four Roman tunnels on Ponza. The Grotte di Ponzio Pilato are the remains of an ancient Roman structure. In the Punta Madonna area, the Grotte di Pilato are associated with a large Roman villa and an adjoining temple.

The route to Frontone leads to the Museo Etnografico and a Bourbon fort overlooking the bay. This allows you to combine a trail with a museum visit and a historic building. For a trip with varied interests, this cultural focus can be a worthwhile addition to the landscape trails.

Zannone and Excursions on the Water

The municipality of Ponza and the island of Zannone belong to the area of the Parco Nazionale del Circeo. Zannone can be reached by boat from Ponza; fishermen and cooperatives depart from Porto di Ponza for the crossing. The Zannone trail runs from Caletta del Varo to the lighthouse. Near the Zannone trail are the remains of a Benedictine monastery built in 504. In summer, there are also sea connections to Ponza from Anzio, Terracina, Naples and Circeo.

A boat tour to the caves leads to the Grotte di Ponzio Pilato. Those who primarily want to experience Ponza from the water can consider this excursion as a different type of trip activity from a day spent on the trails. At Punta Fieno or Monte Guardia, by contrast, the focus is on the landscape and movement on land.

Specific Formats for Planning Your Day

Another option is the combined guided tour of the Cisterne Romane della Dragonara e del Corridoio. It lasts about one hour and covers around 600 metres of walking distance and 50 metres of elevation gain. These details make the format easy to incorporate into your own day planning. Families and other travel groups can therefore combine different elements: a clearly defined guided tour, a trail through vineyards and maquis, a museum or a boat excursion.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Ponza, it helps to decide on your preferred type of trip first. If historic sites and short, clearly described sightseeing formats are the priority, you will plan differently than for a trip with several trails and an excursion to Zannone.
