Itri combines cultural and historical discoveries with trails through Mediterranean landscapes and distinctive local traditions. Those planning a trip can choose between the ancient Via Appia, the Santuario della Madonna della Civita, Castello di Itri and the city’s festivals to focus on different aspects. This variety helps you choose a holiday apartment or other accommodation according to your preferred travel theme, without limiting the trip to just one type of experience.

Culture along the Via Appia

The Museum of Brigandage in Itri is located along the ancient Via Appia. Its exhibition is divided into three sections: the origins of brigandage, brigands in the collective imagination, and brigands in everyday life. Michele Pezza, known as Fra Diavolo, is given particular attention there. For visitors who want to learn about history not only through buildings but also through historical ideas and everyday life, the museum offers a clear thematic approach.

The section of the Via Appia running through Itri preserves an ancient basalt pavement. It runs parallel to the modern Via Appia Nuova through the picturesque Sant’Andrea gorges. Along the Via Appia there are also archaeological remains such as rest stations, known as postes, which were used for changing horses, polygonal walls, mausoleums, bridges and villas. Among the noteworthy relics is an opus incertum cistern from the 1st century BC, regarded as an example of Roman hydraulic engineering. Towards Fondi, centuries-old olive groves, citrus groves and typical Mediterranean vegetation accompany this historic landscape.

Trails to the Sanctuary, Castle and Viewpoints

The Santuario della Madonna della Civita rises on the heights of Monte Fusco. The first records of the building date from 1147; in 1491, the sanctuary took on its present form. The Stations of the Cross leads through the Aurunci Mountains over paved paths and steeper climbs. If you would like to combine a spiritual focus during your stay with a more demanding route, you can take these features into account when planning your day.

The route to Castello di Itri also opens up a distinct perspective on the town. The interesting walking route begins at Porta Mamurra, passes through the Jewish quarter of Vico Giudea and climbs to the upper part of the town. The terrace of Castello di Itri offers a panorama of the Riviera di Ulisse. For a trip involving different age groups, it may be worthwhile to alternate between the museum, the historic trails and a day with steeper climbs, rather than giving all experiences equal weight.

Another trail leads from La Valle in the municipality of Itri via CAI 917 La Valle di Itri–Monte Orso. The route climbs through typical Mediterranean scrub and holm-oak woodland to the Raella karst plateau. This gives you a choice of different landscape impressions: ancient paving and archaeological traces along the Via Appia, wooded slopes on the CAI trail, or the paved and steeper sections of the Stations of the Cross.

Distinctive Local Traditions

The Infiorata di Itri has already been held more than thirty times. During the event, the streets of the historic centre are decorated with geometrically designed floral artworks depicting religious and secular scenes. The Fuochi di San Giuseppe takes place in mid-March. Its bonfire marks the feast of Saint Joseph and the beginning of spring. The two traditions have different emphases: the Infiorata combines design and urban space, while the Fuochi di San Giuseppe marks a festive date in March.
