The historic centre lies on the summit of a hill and has a medieval urban structure. As a cultural and landscape heritage site, it combines built history with the topography of the town. On Piazza Regina Margherita stands a field elm (Ulmus minor Mill.) of historical, cultural and religious value.

In the town centre stands the Chiesa Matrice Santa Maria ad Nives, a Renaissance building from the 15th century. From the piazza, you can reach the church; inside it is a marble sculpture of S. Maria di Nives from the 15th century. Another cultural and historical highlight is the Dittereale Church, which houses the Museo delle Icone Bizantine.

Byzantine Traces and Religious Sites

San Lorenzo is a place of Byzantine origin. Greek continued to be spoken here until the first half of the 18th century. The Byzantine influence is also evident in an icon from the San Pantaleone district. It comes from the Cretan school and dates back to the 12th century.

The Santuario di Maria SS.ma Assunta della Cappella is located in the San Pantaleone district of San Lorenzo and overlooks the Amendolea Valley. On 12 August, the icon of the Madonna della Cappella is carried on foot for approximately 3 kilometres from the Church of San Lorenzo to the sanctuary. The patronal festival of San Lorenzo also includes solemn Eucharistic celebrations in the mother church and a procession carrying the statue of the saint through the town’s alleyways. For daily planning, the approximately 3-kilometre route forms a separate section alongside liturgies, prayers and processions.

Festivals, Routes and Shared Experiences

The annual festival of the Madonna della Cappella combines liturgies, processions and prayers with cultural talks as well as theatre and music events between 12 and 15 August 2026.

The Sentiero dell’Inglese also offers a direct introduction to the town’s history and landscape. On its second stage, the route climbs from San Lorenzo to Rione Castello; from there, it offers a view over the surrounding landscape.

Regional Specialities at the Major Festivals
