Ardore Marina: Coast and Culture

Ardore Marina is one of the small settlements along the Costa dei Gelsomini in Calabria. The main attractions are the Lido Ardore bathing water stretch, the characteristic Via Marina, other beaches in the surrounding area and specific cultural and historical sites.

Coast and Promenade as an Initial Orientation

For the 2026 bathing water classification, the Lido Ardore bathing water stretch covers 861 metres and is rated “excellent.” Spiaggia di Ardore Marina is characterised by fine, light-coloured sand and pebbles, particularly near the shore. The characteristic promenade of Ardore Marina, Via Marina, is approximately 2 kilometres long. For a day on the coast, the 861-metre bathing water stretch and the approximately two-kilometre-long Via Marina can be planned at different paces.

Beach Landscape in the Immediate Surroundings

Spiaggia di Ardore is in the immediate vicinity of Ardore Marina. Spiaggia di Bovalino is also in the immediate vicinity. Spiaggia Locri and Spiaggia di Bianco are located in the surroundings of Ardore Marina. For beach planning, Ardore and Bovalino remain in the immediate vicinity, while Locri and Bianco belong to the surroundings of Ardore Marina. The four beaches therefore have different spatial relationships to the town, without forming a single area.

Byzantine and Ancient Traces

The Chiesa della Madonna della Marina was a private chapel of the Gambacorta family and is typically Byzantine. Culture enthusiasts will find a Byzantine private chapel and a ninth-century church that is now a ruin here. The ancient church of Santissimo Salvatore in the marina dates from the ninth century and is now a ruin.

Culture in the Wider Surrounding Area

In the wider surroundings of Ardore Marina, the Soprintendenza Archeologica Della Calabria is associated with an archaeological site. Casino Macrí is associated with a palace in the wider surroundings of Ardore Marina. The Museo Nazionale di Locri is associated with a museum in the wider surroundings of Ardore Marina. The Sanctuary of Persephone (santuario della Mannella) is associated with an ancient site in the wider surroundings of Ardore Marina.

Coast and Culture in Ardore Marina

A day focused on Lido Ardore, Spiaggia di Ardore Marina or Via Marina has a different emphasis from a day shaped by Byzantine, ancient or museum-related sites. The Costa dei Gelsomini remains the geographical setting, while the churches of Ardore Marina and the destinations in the wider surroundings open up different historical themes. In this way, the coastal town combines a selection of a bathing water stretch, promenade, churches, palace, museum and ancient sites.
