Holiday apartment in Delianuova – Hiking, Mountains and History
Delianuova combines marked trails in the Aspromonte National Park with cultural and historical traces. Trail history, mountain landscapes, rock, a monastery, a church, a fountain and an annually celebrated festival shape the town’s different facets.
Trail Markings and Historic Paths
The Da Bova a Delianuova hiking trail in the Aspromonte National Park is marked with red-white-red trail markers and the number 128. Its historical connection dates back to the mid-19th century, when the path served contact and exchange between Bova and Pedavoli. For those interested in culture, the route in Aspromonte combines trail markings with the history of exchange between Bova and Pedavoli. The path’s former function is therefore part of the history of the same route, which is identified by a fixed number and clearly recognizable signs.
The Sentiero del Brigante
The Sentiero del Brigante also allows for different hiking directions, as it can be walked in both directions. This leaves the choice of direction open when planning a day’s hike. Navigation is aided by horizontal and vertical white-red trail markings as well as the SB symbols. At Monte Cannavi, the Sentiero Bova-Delianuova, Route 102, meets the Sentiero del Brigante.
Fountain Rest Area in Aspromonte
Piani di Carmelia is a fountain rest area at an elevation of 1,305 metres on a route in the Aspromonte National Park. Piani di Carmelia is connected to the Sentiero del Brigante as a rest area. At 1,305 metres above sea level, Piani di Carmelia is a rest area in the mountain landscape of Aspromonte. The elevation places the rest area within a specifically identified section of Aspromonte and can be taken into account when planning a day’s hike.
Stone, Monastery and Local History
The history of the area includes Pietra Verde, a variety of serpentine that was quarried in the village of Cotripa until 1933. Santa Marina was one of the first Italo-Greek monasteries where archaeological excavations were carried out. Cotripa and Santa Marina therefore represent two different historical themes: the quarrying of a specific type of rock and the connection between monastic tradition and archaeological research. Those interested in culture will find specific historical points of reference for their own journey in Cotripa and Santa Marina.
The Chiesa dell'Assunta was rebuilt after the 1895 earthquake. Another surviving testimony is the Fontana di Sant’Elia. It is the only surviving one of four artistically designed fountains in Delianuova that existed before the 1783 earthquake. At the church, the focus is on reconstruction after 1895; at the Fontana di Sant’Elia, it is on the preservation of a single fountain from this earlier ensemble.
Maria Santissima Assunta in August
The Feast of Maria Santissima Assunta is celebrated every year on 14 and 15 August and includes processions through the town.
