Archaeology and historical traces

The Menzinara locality lies at the summit of an isolated hill flanked by watercourses and overlooks a broad stretch of the Ionian coast. Its archaeological excavation uncovered a Lucanian farmhouse that was used throughout the second half of the 4th century BC. The square building had sides measuring 22 metres; seven rooms of different sizes were arranged around an open courtyard measuring 5.80 × 5.80 metres.

The townscape also preserves distinctive historical references. The first Cappella della Madonna del Carmine was built by the de Martino barons. Il Calvario is a monument with five crosses, probably built in the first half of the 19th century. Palazzo Solano dates from the founding period of Montegiordano and preserves the de Martino coat of arms above its portal. In the Caprara locality, the chapel of the Grància, dedicated to the archangel Saint Michael, survives in the standing masonry; animal shelters are partly attached to it. The Grància is considered a characteristic element of early Cistercian farming.

The religious history also includes the Via Matris, a devotion to the Seven Sorrows of Mary that was practised in Montegiordano on the Friday before Palm Sunday. Seven crosses along the outer edge of the town led from the destroyed old parish church to Il Calvario. On the second Sunday in May, the remembrance of San Domenico Abate was celebrated with an almost three-day festival featuring a mass, various market stalls and numerous animals. Under Marquis Lelio (Aurelio) Leone, the Castello was renovated in 1656.

Murals and a short walking route

The “Paese dipinto” of Montegiordano comprises more than 200 murals by the local artist Franco La Teana. They depict everyday life, proverbs, family memories and the faces of the community as a narrative about the history and identity of the town. Starting from the main piazza, you can follow a short walking route along the murals. This makes this part of Montegiordano particularly interesting if you would like to combine culture and exercise in a manageable walk.
