Spezzano Albanese combines sacred tradition, archaeological sites and thermal history with a landscape shaped by hills and plains. The Cammino Basiliano passes through Spezzano Albanese, bringing a hiking and pilgrimage perspective to the history of the town. The themes range from local history and religious festivals to archaeology and the thermal history of the Terme di Spezzano.

Archaeology and Thermal History in Spezzano Albanese

The Museo di Torre Mordillo is located in the historic centre of Spezzano Albanese, in the Palazzo Luci. It has five rooms, each dedicated to a historical period, and is fully equipped with educational videos and explanatory information panels. The five period rooms combine chronological organisation with vivid explanations and give the history of Torre Mordillo a clear structure.

On the plateau of Torre del Mordillo, during the Hellenistic period, in the 4th to 3rd century BC, a fortification was built along the entire edge of the hill, featuring an unusually designed enclosing wall. The Torre Mordillo Archaeological Park is located on a hill overlooking the plain of Sibari. Systematic research uncovered an extensive necropolis at Torre Mordillo in 1888, dating to the period before Greek colonisation.

The hill occupied by the Castello di Scribla overlooks the plain below and lies 79 metres above sea level. According to Goffredo Malaterra, Roberto il Guiscardo built the Castello di Scribla in 1048 as an outpost for the conquest of the region. This attributed origin adds a medieval perspective to the archaeological history without altering the traditional nature of this statement.

Sacred Traditions and Special Seasons

The Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie was founded in the 16th century. Two statues of the Madonna are kept in the sanctuary: a permanently installed statue and a processional statue. The festivities include a procession that leads from the sanctuary through the town. The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo was elevated to parish status on 18 February 1607. Locally, Holy Week is known as Java e Madhe; on Holy Thursday, the Mass in Coena Domini and the washing of the feet are celebrated.

The Terme di Spezzano provide another focal point. They were established as a thermal station in 1923 and are located in a park of more than ten hectares with Mediterranean pine and eucalyptus trees. The water emerges from five springs; the Fonte Thurio and Fonte Acqua delle Grazie are used primarily. Thus, alongside history and faith, the development of spa culture is also part of Spezzano Albanese's characteristic range of themes.

The municipality describes the Fiera di Ottobre 2025 as a tradition rooted in its history, featuring local products and gastronomy. Archaeology, religious traditions, thermal history, as well as local products and gastronomy at the Fiera di Ottobre 2025, set different accents.
