Holiday apartment in San Demetrio Corone – Arbëreshë culture and chestnut groves
San Demetrio Corone lies at an altitude of 521 metres on a ridge on the northern slopes of the Sila Greca, overlooking the Crati Plain and Pollino. At the same time, numerous chestnut groves shape the vegetation in the upper parts of the town, in Buttorino, Castagna Rotonda, and Poggio, giving the area a distinctive natural character. Exploring San Demetrio Corone therefore means moving between panoramic views and the districts of Buttorino, Castagna Rotonda, and Poggio, which are characterised by chestnut groves.
Holiday apartment in San Demetrio Corone between landscape and culture
Buttorino, Castagna Rotonda, and Poggio belong to the upper part of San Demetrio Corone. In San Demetrio Corone, the Arbëresh identity, along with its culture, traditions, language, Byzantine rites, and colourful traditional costumes, remains deeply rooted in local life.
The Arbëreshë Song Festival of San Demetrio Corone preserves and promotes the rich Arbëresh cultural heritage and encourages linguistic and musical research. The Feast of San Demetrio takes place on 26 October, making this date a fixed point in the town’s annual calendar.
Churches, mills, and the route to the Eremo di San Nilo
The Chiesa di Maria SS di Costantinopoli (Chiesa di Mezzaratura) is a Byzantine Greek Catholic church with a wooden iconostasis. The wooden iconostasis is decorated with icons of the Virgin and Child, Christ Pantocrator, and several saints. The Chiesa di San Demetrio Megalomartire was one of the first Arbëresh churches with an iconostasis, as well as a square Greek altar beneath a canopy and a dome with four columns. The churches draw attention to iconostases and floor mosaics, while the mills highlight the use of a watercourse to process grain.
In the Chiesa di Sant’Adriano, the floor is partly made of opus sectile and partly of mosaic. The two mills of San Demetrio Corone are located at different elevations and used the gradient of the same watercourse to drive the millwheels one after the other and process grain into flour.
The remains of the Eremo di San Nilo lie in the Vallone di Sant’Elia, 1 km from the Chiesa di Sant’Adriano. The unpaved path leading there is steep and difficult to walk; this particular section should be taken into account separately when planning the day.
Arbëreshë literature and traditional cuisine
The Centro Culturale Girolamo De Rada houses a municipal library with an extensive collection of books and other resources, particularly on local and Arbëreshë culture. Macchia Albanese is also home to the birthplace of Girolamo de Rada (1814–1903), a central figure of the Rilindja and one of the founders of modern Albanian literature.
In San Demetrio Corone, dishes from the traditional Albanian and Greek-Eastern cuisine offer an authentic culinary experience.
