Vaccarizzo: Churches, History and Mountain Landscape
Vaccarizzo is situated at an altitude of 459 metres in a panoramic location at the foot of Monte Cozzo Cervello. When choosing a holiday apartment in Vaccarizzo, the main attractions here are the combination of mountain landscapes, local history, hiking opportunities and regional cuisine. You can tailor the focus of your stay accordingly.
Historic Townscape and Churches
Vaccarizzo’s attractions include the alleyways and spacious squares of its historic centre. The alleyways and squares offer different perspectives of the town: sometimes the layout of the alleyways takes centre stage, while at other times it is the open character of the spacious squares. If your family has different interests, this part of town can be explored as a separate theme.
The Chiesa di San Rocco is located on the outskirts of Vaccarizzo. Its stone entrance portal features a pointed arch and a rectangular frame. Inside, the church preserves numerous wooden structures of considerable artistic and historical value. For the history of the town, the portal and the wooden structures are two distinct details of the same building.
The Chiesa della Visitazione di Maria Santissima is the parish church of Vaccarizzo di Montalto Uffugo as well as of Parantoro, Santa Maria La Castagna, Caldopiano and Commicelle. In the village of Vaccarizzo, you can also see the simple façade of the Chiesa di San Francesco; a staircase built along the main façade leads to the stone portal. Vaccarizzo is also home to an old silk manufactory, where silk was once produced and then sold.
History Between Trade and the Waldensians
Between the 13th and 14th centuries, a Jewish colony settled in Vaccarizzo, whose members presumably came to develop trade. In the 14th century, Occitans, also known as Ultramontani, came to Vaccarizzo and remained there until the persecution in the second half of the 16th century. Evidence has been preserved for the parishes of Santa Maria La Castagna and Vaccarizzo, now united, since the Relationes ad Limina of 1600.
Hiking Opportunities Around Vaccarizzo
Vaccarizzo di Montalto is part of the historic network of the Cammino Calabro Valdese, a hiking trail for exploring the cultural, economic and social heritage of the Waldensians in Calabria. In the wider regional area around Vaccarizzo runs the mountain trail from Paola to Montalto, known as the Sentiero del Pellegrino.
Local Flavours and Choosing Your Holiday Apartment
At Bar di Maria in Vaccarizzo, Maccarruni are said to be prepared almost every day. Together with the churches, town centre and hiking trails, the cuisine adds to the picture of a place that brings together cultural, landscape and culinary interests. When choosing a holiday apartment in Vaccarizzo, you can therefore set the priorities for your trip: historic sites, mountain landscapes, hiking trails or Maccarruni.
