Amantea’s historic center can be reached via the steep climb up Via Cavour. An archway between the old houses marks this entrance and leads into the historic part of town.

Among the historically and artistically significant details are the portals of Palazzo Mirabelli, dating from the 17th century. The Chiesa e Convento di San Bernardino da Siena is also home to the marble statue Madonna col Bambino, created by Antonello Gagini in 1505.

The Chiesa Matrice also tells part of the town’s history: construction there was completed in 1688 with financial support from local worshippers. On Good Friday morning, the Chiesa Matrice is both the starting point and the endpoint of the Processione delle Varette in Amantea.

In the Catocastro district, the Chiesa del Collegio formed part of a 17th-century Jesuit college. The adjoining Sant’Elia church is designed in the Baroque style and has a richly carved suspended wooden pulpit.

The surviving remains of the Ruderi-Convento di S. Francesco d’Assisi include a 13th-century church. Today, the Ruderi-Convento di S. Francesco d’Assisi are a historic and tourist attraction. Nativity scenes and Passion displays are exhibited in the Chiesa del Carmine at Christmas and Easter.

Amantea’s Maritime Side

On the seabed off Amantea, the Villaggio dei saraghi consists of three submerged rocks at depths of 16 to 22 meters. The unusual name therefore refers to a clearly defined underwater site.

Local History, Film and Flavor

Below Amantea, Cave Park formerly served as a shelter and mooring place for boats and ships. In summer, Cave Park is also a venue for film screenings hosted by the La Guarimba International Film Festival.

In the Coreca district, the remains of an ancient cylindrical watchtower from the 16th century stand above the cliff that slopes down toward the sea. The site thus combines a striking coastal setting with a historic monument.

The Fico Dottato di Cosenza PDO provides a regional taste. It is considered a Calabrian confectionery specialty and is recommended for tasting in Amantea.
