Pescopagano lies on a steep rocky cliff above the entire Ofanto Valley. The landscape combines lush greenery with rocky ridges, barren slopes and fragrant broom. Those planning a journey between nature, local history and religious traditions will find a range of themes here to consider when choosing suitable accommodation.

Landscape Between Rock and Forest

The Bosco Le Rose, which covers 610 hectares, is part of Pescopagano’s natural landscape. Together with the rocky terrain and open, barren slopes, it defines the character of the area. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether the landscape should be the main focus or whether to combine nature experiences with culture and regional customs. You can then choose a holiday apartment or holiday home according to your personal travel interests, without the accommodation itself having to be associated with specific amenities.

Historic Centre and Sacred Art

The historic centre includes Neoclassical aristocratic palaces built between the 18th and 19th centuries. Palazzo Pascale was built on an earlier medieval building complex and thus represents the layering of different periods in the townscape. The Torre dell’Orologio also points to older structures: it was built on the former town gate, Porta Sibilla. In a niche, it displays a stone bust of the two-faced Janus, an ancient mythological deity.

Further historical and religious traces complete this picture. The ruins of the Chiesa Madre Santa Maria Assunta include a Byzantine inscription from the 7th century. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista bears an inscription on its gable indicating that it was built around the year 1000, approximately 970. The parish museum of sacred art contains wooden and marble sculptures, paintings and sacred vestments. Those interested in ecclesiastical art, inscriptions and architectural history can include this focus when planning their days in Pescopagano.

Ruins, Pilgrimage and Special Customs

There are also points of interest for a cultural and historical journey outside the historic centre. Around the year 1000, the Normans founded the Abbazia di San Lorenzo in Tufara; today, only a few ruins remain. Only a few remnants of the former fortress of the Castello di Pescopagano have survived as well. The Santuario di Montemauro is located at an altitude of about 1,000 metres on the summit of Monte Mauro. Every Sunday in May through 15 August inclusive, worshippers walk there to honour the Virgin Mary. This information helps with planning the timing of a trip when religious traditions and the landscape are of shared interest.

One of the unusual local traditions is La Passata. This old custom was intended to prevent inguinal hernias in children. On the Feast of the Annunciation, while the bells are ringing, male children from the community are led through an arch made from a blackberry branch stripped of leaves and thorns. During the festivities in honour of Pescopagano’s patron saint, San Francesco Di Paola, the traditional Volo dell’Angelo also takes place, a performance shaped by folklore and faith.

Regional Cuisine and Trip Planning

A sagra in Pescopagano is dedicated to meat and cheese from the Podolica cattle breed. This gives the journey a culinary dimension in addition to its landscape and cultural heritage. When looking for accommodation, you can therefore consider whether you would primarily like to focus on the town’s history, religious destinations, nature or regional events. Pescopagano offers several different perspectives without requiring all experiences to be combined into one fixed programme.
