Discover Fraccia: Monte Alpi, Fossils and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Fraccia
Fraccia combines impressive landscapes with unusual discoveries. A hiking route starting here leads via Sorgente Fontanelle, listed as 1.0 km along the route. Monte Alpi follows at 4.5 km, and the Belvedere Giardino dei Loricati at 5.1 km. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Fraccia can therefore consider the village a starting point for a variety of nature experiences: shorter stops can be included in the itinerary just as easily as a longer tour focusing on mountains and viewpoints.
Monte Alpi and its distinctive flora
Monte Alpi is home to Italy's northernmost population of laurel pines. Around 1,000 specimens are spread across elevations between 1,200 and 1,700 m. This special feature makes the mountain a destination for anyone who wants to discover not only striking viewpoints during their trip, but also distinctive flora.
The SI T04 hiking trail from Latronico to Castelsaraceno heads towards Monte Alpi and reaches the summit of Santa Croce at an elevation of 1,893 m. The badlands of Latronico offer a different perspective on the landscape. They lie along the eastern and northeastern edge of the historic centre and form a scenic viewpoint. The sharp ridges created by erosion and the runoff of clay-rich soils offer views of the Pollino Massif, the Monti di Lauria, Colle dei Greci and large parts of the Sinni Valley.
The Malboschetto municipal forest of Latronico covers around 700 hectares. A road also runs through Malboschetto to a mountain hut at an elevation of about 1,000 m. There are equipped areas with tables, benches and fire pits. This means that, alongside mountain trails, there are also quieter options for a break outdoors, without having to limit your stay to just one type of activity.
Fossils and special impressions
Below Monte Alpi, a fish fossil can be seen on a large slab of stone in Contrada Iannazzo. It is classified as a specimen of the Istiophoridae family from the genus makaira, known among anglers as marlin. The fossil is 235 cm long, 95 cm high and has a 30 cm-long rostrum. It dates from around 30 million years ago. In the wider area around Fraccia, there is also a huge fish fossil in Solarino di Iannazzo that is 30 million years old.
Earth Cinema in the thermal park of Latronico offers another unusual experience. The 45-metre-long incision dug into the earth can be entered from both sides. This creates a contrast to classic mountain and viewpoint destinations when planning your trip: in addition to hiking trails and natural formations, there is a place whose spatial design itself becomes part of the experience.
Archaeology in Latronico
Anyone wishing to combine nature and history can include the Museo Civico Archeologico in Latronico in their itinerary. It comprises two exhibition rooms with finds from the caves of Calda and the indigenous Oenotrian necropolis of Colle dei Greci. The five caves of Calda contain archaeological finds dating from 8000 to 1300 BC. This time span gives the visit an especially broad historical context.
The choice of accommodation therefore depends above all on how you want to structure your trip. A holiday apartment or holiday house in Fraccia is suitable for an itinerary in which hiking trails starting from the village play an important role. If you want to focus more on archaeological finds, landscape formations or individual points of interest, you can include these topics as separate excursions during your holiday. This keeps the choice of location connected to the question of whether you want to set off directly on a route in the morning or combine different natural and cultural attractions.
More destinations to choose from
