If you choose Sant'Alfonso as your destination, it is worth exploring the diverse municipal area of Lauria. Here, protected landscapes, historic churches, regional cuisine and trails for physically experienced visitors come together. The SP 154 Sant'Alfonso provincial road is also a specific point of reference for orientation: in the road classification, it is listed at the SP 101 di Seluci and the SS 653 at kilometre 0+800.

Nature and Trails in the Municipal Area of Lauria

One particularly notable landscape feature is the Rupe dell'Armo. This natural viewpoint opens up a view over the Valle del Noce, creating an impressive moment for anyone who wants to combine sightseeing with experiences in the landscape. The municipal area of Lauria also includes 1,016 hectares, or 5.8 percent of the municipal territory, of the Appennino Lucano-Val d'Agri-Lagonegrese National Park.

For active days, there are various more demanding destinations to consider. On Monte Sirino, there are routes for particularly experienced cyclists and trekking enthusiasts that can lead to the Cappella della Madonna del Sirino. Section SI T05 of the Sentiero Italia runs through the beech trees of the Conserva forest to the shelter of the same name. These options appeal to different travel preferences: while the viewpoint and the forest passage offer an immediate experience of nature, the Monte Sirino routes are explicitly aimed at experienced active travellers.

Churches, History and Regional Culture

Lauria has several noteworthy religious sites. The Chiesa San Nicola di Bari contains paintings by Pasquale Iannotta and Mariano Lanziani, including a work depicting Sant'Alfonso and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. A document from 1522 identifies the church as Lauria's first parish church. The Chiesa di San Giacomo preserves a carved wooden choir, the oldest part of which dates back to 1554.

In Lauria Inferiore, the Cappella di San Giovanni Battista contains a fresco from 1521 attributed to Pietro Sarubbo. The Castello also creates its own architectural accent: its ground plan is octagonal, complemented by massive surrounding walls. Access is possible by prior reservation, which you should take into account when planning a day of cultural exploration.

A historical and religious walk adds to these impressions. In recent years, the “piccolo cammino di Santiago” took place in Lauria on the Sunday before the Feast of Saint James on 25 July, a walk to the city's places of worship. The area's culinary offerings range from homemade pasta and grilled or oven-cooked meat to cheese and various cured meats.

Excursions and the Right Location for Your Accommodation

When choosing a holiday apartment in Sant'Alfonso, you can first consider whether your trip will focus more on church art, landscapes or active trails. Lauria is a transport hub for the A2, also known as the Autostrada del Mediterraneo, between Salerno and Reggio Calabria; the Fondovalle Sinnica to the Ionian coast of Basilicata; and the Fondovalle del Noce to the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria and Basilicata. This makes it possible to combine different ideas for day trips without limiting your stay to just one theme.

Another cultural highlight is the Museo del Termalismo in Latronico. It is housed in a historic thermal complex built in 1928 and is divided into eight sections. Topics covered include thermal spa culture, local crafts, traditional foods, rituals, festivals and migration. This allows you to combine nature, sacred history, everyday culture and cuisine into a varied trip.
