Holiday apartment in Bari: Old Town, museums and coast
Bari Vecchia has a medieval historic core enclosed by walls. The district lies on limestone rock facing the sea. Its narrow streets contain around forty churches and more than one hundred votive chapels. Between fortified walls, sacred buildings and its open coastal setting, Bari reveals a historical side that is reflected in several periods and types of buildings.
Culture
The Castello Svevo di Bari is an imposing 12th-century fortress and is now used as a museum. It is located on the edge of the historic center, near the harbor area and the cathedral. The first floor was reopened to the public in 2017 after restoration and conversion into a museum. Also on the edge of the Old Town, the collection of the Museo Civico is housed in a medieval fortified complex.
The medieval Benedictine monastery of Santa Scolastica, with its adjoining 16th-century bastion, now houses the Archaeological Museum of the Metropolitan City of Bari. The archaeological tour at Santa Scolastica takes visitors from the 800s through the Middle Ages to prehistory. The Archeologia di Bari section illustrates the development of the city from the Middle Ages to the Bronze Age on the basis of preserved archaeological layers.
The Basilica di San Nicola houses the relics of Saint Nicholas. Its Romanesque architecture is characteristic of Norman architecture. The official portal of the Basilica di San Nicola also offers an immersive virtual 360-degree tour of the basilica's interior. A museum adjoins the Cattedrale di Bari, where historical, artistic and liturgical objects are accessible to visitors.
History
Other historic buildings are also located in the vicinity of Bari: the Castello Normanno - Svevo, a castle; the Museo della Cattedrale, a museum; the Museo Diocesano Bari, a museum; and the Palazzo Simi, a palace. Thus, different forms of urban and sacred history stand side by side without their respective characteristics merging into one another.
The Museo Civico di Bari offers guided tours and educational workshops by prior reservation. The Pinacoteca Corrado Giaquinto is located on the fourth floor of the historic Palazzo della Provincia di Bari. It can be accessed via the main entrance on the Lungomare Nazario Sauro or the side entrance on Via Spalato, and offers audio guides in Italian and English with critical explanations of the masterpieces on display.
Landscape
The vicinity of Bari includes Spiaggia Pane e Pomodoro, a beach, and the Arco Delle Meravigli, a natural arch. The Lungomare di Bari is a promenade that runs through a large part of the city. The nearby area also includes Piazza Garibaldi, a garden, and the Giardini di Piazza Cesare Battisti, a garden complex.
Experiences
The Teatro Petruzzelli is Bari's largest theater and, measured by its size, is one of Italy's important theaters. It presents musicals and concerts by national and international artists. Via Arcobasso, also known as Via Orecchiette, offers a different insight into local everyday life: there, visitors can watch women from Bari prepare fresh pasta.
