Romanesque architecture and historic buildings in Modugno
The fortified estate of Balsignano is one of the best-preserved rural settlements in the Terra di Bari area. Balsignano is also home to the Chiesa di San Felice, an important example of Apulian Romanesque architecture. Balsignano therefore brings together a fortified estate and a Romanesque church as two distinct historical landmarks.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria Annunziata provides further historical highlights. Its present structure was built between 1604 and 1626, while the bell tower follows the style of Apulian Romanesque architecture. The dates at Santa Maria Annunziata thus provide a chronological point of reference alongside the Romanesque bell tower. In Modugno’s historic centre, the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Suffragio stands in Piazza del Sedile; it is also known as Chiesa del Purgatorio. This allows visitors to discover different periods and architectural forms through specific sites during their stay.
Festivals, regional cuisine and special destinations
The festival culture is also part of Modugno’s character. The Fiera del Crocifisso is a historic fair in Modugno that was inaugurated in 1622. The festival in honour of Saint Roch takes place on the last Sunday in September and is accompanied by processions on the preceding days. The Feast of Saint Roch therefore includes both the processions on the preceding days and the last Sunday in September. The 2024 programme for the Fiera del Crocifisso also included the Sagra del Crocifisso, a food tour featuring typical products.
For planning active days, the Ciclovia dei Borboni offers a clear connection to the surrounding area: following it, you reach the ancient Casale di Balsignano after Modugno. Balsignano lies between two Lame southeast of Modugno’s settlement centre. Its location between two Lame also provides a specific landscape reference for this section.
Santa Maria della Grotta is regarded as a slow-tourism destination associated with the routes of the Cammino Materano.
There are two palaces in the immediate vicinity of Modugno: Palazzo Angarano-Maranta and Palazzo del I ramo della famiglia Capitaneo. The Cittadella Mediterranea della Scienza and the Museo Civico - Palazzo Rogadeo are also located in the surrounding area, each being a museum. Spiaggia Pane e Pomodoro is one of the beaches in the vicinity of Modugno. The surrounding area also includes Parco Padre Pio, a park, and Arco Delle Meravigli, a natural arch. Spiaggia Il Crocifisso, a beach, is located farther afield in the region.
