Terlizzi combines impressive architecture, art, ceramics, religious traditions and Apulian festival culture. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Terlizzi, you will find numerous specific themes here to shape your stay – from neoclassical architecture and lively events to regional specialities.

Holiday Apartment in Terlizzi: Culture and Local Character

Construction of the Concattedrale di S. Michele Arcangelo began in 1783 based on a design by the architect Michelangelo Bonvino and was completed in 1872. The cathedral is regarded as one of the most mature and significant examples of Neoclassicism in Apulia. Its interior contains important works of art and high-quality furnishings by local artists and craftsmen, including a cycle of paintings donated by Michele De Napoli.

Another defining building is the Torre Normanna, which is also known as the Torre dell'Orologio. It is a remnant of Terlizzi's former defensive system from the 11th century, more than 31 metres high and topped by a bell tower decorated with majolica. The restored interior leads via five rooms arranged one above the other and several stairways to a terrace. From there, the view extends over the rooftops of Terlizzi, the nearby Adriatic coast and the heights of the Murgia.

The Pinacoteca Michele de Napoli opened in 1898 in the painter's birthplace, which he donated together with numerous works. These include designs, sketches, preparatory studies, paintings and cartoons. With more than 1,000 pieces, the Pinacoteca is the most significant and extensive collection in Apulia attributed to a single artist.

Cultural life also extends beyond historic buildings. Since 2019, the participatory management by Collettivo Zebù at the Laboratorio Urbano MAT has produced more than 700 public events. These include theatre series, concerts, multidisciplinary festivals, stand-up comedy, photography exhibitions, literary gatherings and contemporary dance projects.

Sovereto, Madonna di Sovereto and Major Festivals

About three kilometres from Terlizzi lies Sovereto, with an old hamlet and the sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna di Sovereto. According to tradition, the panel painting of the Madonna di Sovereto dates from the 11th century; an ancient legend says that it was found in the cave beneath the church. From a medieval tower in Sovereto, there is an elevated view of the sanctuary complex and its defensive system.

On the first Sunday in August, the Festa Maggiore takes place. During this festival, the Madonna di Sovereto triumphantly returns to the town on a colossal festival float. The float is moved by devout helpers and guided by traditionally dressed helmsmen.

Regional Cuisine and Ceramic Tradition

In September, the Sagra dello spiedo terlizzese brings together sausages and gnomorelli. These are offal rolls flavoured with bay leaf, cooked over glowing charcoal and served with the elongated flatbread Pizzarello. At the end of October, a festival is dedicated to olives and olive oil. It offers fried pasole and nolche, olives preserved in lime and flavoured with wild fennel, as well as fresh bread with a drizzle of new olive oil that has just come from the oil mill.

The town's craftsmanship also includes ceramic production: following a positive decision by the Consiglio Nazionale Ceramico established at the Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy on 15 December 2022, Terlizzi was included, within the meaning of Italian Law No. 188/90, as an area with established ceramic production.

When choosing your holiday apartment in Terlizzi, you can align the focus of your stay with these themes. Architecture and collections shape the cultural side, Sovereto complements it with its sanctuary, legend and historical perspectives, while the festivals in August, September and late October showcase different forms of local customs and flavours.
