Discover culture and local history

The Diási Water Mill complex was fully renovated by 2021. It houses a bakery museum, the Festetics Herb Garden and a herbarium. The Pásztorház is a traditional farmhouse furnished as it would have been between the two world wars. Craft workshops using a working oven round out the visit. An archaeological exhibition focuses on an Avar military leader. It also displays finds from a grave that had remained untouched until it was excavated, as well as finds from the Keszthely culture.

Another way to explore local history is to visit the Nepomuki Szent János spring and its monument. The site includes a statue erected in 1828, which was restored when the spring was renovated in 2000. Darnay Pince also tells a story of an older building and everyday culture: the wooden wine cellar dates from 1644, has been preserved from the period of Ottoman rule, and is considered an outstanding example of folk architecture. At Darnay Pince and the event barn, you can sample wines from the surrounding area and local dishes.

Nature, views and activities

You can learn more about the Keszthely Mountains at the Nature House Visitor Centre. Interactive displays, photographs, audio and visual effects, and lifelike dioramas offer impressions of the mountains’ wildlife and natural assets. Themed programmes include talks, quizzes and activities in the activity room. If you prefer to be outdoors, the Gyenesdiás cardio trail offers a walking and exercise route with information boards: your resting pulse is measured first, followed by your exercise pulse at further stations.

There are various routes to choose from for hiking. The Family Circular Tour starts at the Tourinform office in Gyenesdiás, is 8.6 km long, takes two hours and has an elevation difference of 350 m. It is rated easy. More challenging is the Darnay-Dornyai-Béla Memorial Trail, which links lookout towers in the Keszthely Mountains. It also starts at the Tourinform office, is 16.7 km long and has an additional 8.2 km option. Guided hikes around Gyenesdiás are available; ask the Kayak Island team for dates. Pogácsa pastries and hot tea are served on these hikes.

A prominent landmark above the village is Kűmell, a nearly 30 m-high, two-part dolomite rock outcrop. From the Festetics Lookout Tower, rebuilt in 2000, the panorama stretches from Keszthely Bay to the ridges of the Keszthely Mountains, cut through by valleys. In Gyenesdiás, Nagymező has equipped fire pits, tables, benches, a football pitch and a shelter for visitors. These varied spots can inspire your outdoor trips and stays.

Water sports, games and practical information

Diási Játékstrand has beach volleyball, beach football and streetball courts, as well as facilities for teqball, table tennis and other games. Pedal boats, kayaks and SUP boards are also available to rent. Family-friendly services and entertaining animation programmes are part of the offer too. You can therefore choose between games, exercise and water activities for a day of your holiday.

Aquatika has a bicycle rest and charging station with a rack for 12 bicycles, three outdoor charging points and a bicycle service station. The roof serves as a viewing terrace overlooking Lake Balaton and Keszthely Bay. The neighbouring Festetics Imre Animal Park covers 4.2 hectares and offers close encounters with wild and domestic animals. The market and event square is right next to Diás railway station, about a two-minute walk away. This location may help you find your way around the square.
