Keszthely: Castle, green spaces and discoveries on Lake Balaton

Keszthely combines the history of its castle and expansive green spaces with discoveries on Lake Balaton. At Festetics Palace, exhibitions tell the story of the Festetics family; in Helikon Park, the main path leads straight to the shore of Lake Balaton. Festetics Palace was built and expanded continuously from the mid-18th century onwards. It remained the property of the Festetics family for 200 years. The Historical Model Railway Exhibition is in a league of its own. The layout covers more than 2.7 kilometres of track and includes more than 600 buildings across 503 square metres. Interactive features let visitors activate hidden scenes; a special camera locomotive also offers a view from the perspective of a train driver. Families and railway enthusiasts can switch between admiring the detailed layout and exploring it through play. There is also a palm house in the palace park.

Green spaces and special discoveries

Helikon Park covers 17 hectares and is the town’s largest green space. It was erected in 1921 to mark the centenary of the Helikon Festivities and has become a landmark of Keszthely. The pedestrian zone is lined with a series of listed Baroque and Historicist buildings. Szigetfürdő offers a contrast: following several phases of renovation in the second half of the 2000s, it regained its 19th-century appearance, while its interior meets modern standards. The Balaton Museum brings together approximately 10,000 exhibits across more than 700 square metres; interactive games and other surprises complement the displays.

The Georgikon Majortörténeti Kiállítóhely’s experience farm offers a petting zoo, a play barn, a plant exhibition, a playground and a baking area.
