Caves and forests as nature experiences

Csodabogyós Cave is on the eastern edge of the Balatonederics Plateau. In its 20 × 20-metre chamber, “Függőkert”, there are dozens of human-sized stalagmite columns and thousands of stalactites. The cave is more than 6 kilometres long and features rich stalactite formations. The temperature stays at around 9.5°C year-round, with relative humidity at 100 per cent—useful reference points if you’re including the cave in your travel plans.

The entrance cannot be reached by car. From the starting point, it’s about a 40-minute walk through the forest of the Balaton Uplands National Park to the cave. Allow for this walk when planning your day. A cave visit and an outing focused on nature along a trail therefore differ in the way they are described.

The Pele-Apó Nature Trail was designed for children and has 38 stations along 8.5 kilometres between Balatongyörök and Balatonederics. The route passes through forest habitats and introduces visitors to their natural features. The information boards are in Hungarian and English. The route length, number of stations and languages are useful details when planning your visit.

Museums, collections and local history

The Africa Museum is considered Balatonederics’ best-known attraction. It is surrounded by a small animal park, home to wild boar, a herd of buffalo, zebras, camels and other animals. The museum and animal park are among the varied themes you can take into account when planning excursions.

The Balatonederics Tájház (traditional house museum) was opened in 2010 and is considered the first open-air or local heritage museum of its kind in the region. Its first exhibition featured equipment used in viticulture and winemaking. The Tájház also includes an attic, indoor and outdoor ovens, and open-air exhibition areas. These exhibition spaces and the equipment from the first display give the site a specific connection to winegrowing and rural life.

The churches are also part of local history, though the present-day church should be distinguished from an earlier building. The Catholic church in Balatonederics is dedicated to John the Baptist and is listed by the municipality as a nationally protected historic building. An earlier church was built in the 14th century, was also dedicated to John the Baptist, and no longer exists.

The fishing collection at Bringatanya illustrates the wildlife of Lake Balaton and displays equipment used in fishing. Visitors can scan QR codes to access additional information and facts about individual exhibits. Alongside nature and local history, the focus also includes the lake’s wildlife and the fishing equipment used there.

Wine and the beach on Lake Balaton

Szabó Pince winery offers wine tastings and wine to enjoy on its terraces, with views of Lake Balaton and the surrounding mountains. Wine tastings can also be arranged in advance. As part of a rural dining experience, guests can enjoy homemade cold platters and simple hot dishes prepared in a cauldron or oven. If you’d like to include regional food and wine in your holiday, this offers another way to shape your trip.

Balatonederics beach is scheduled to operate for a fee from 15 June to 31 August; weather may affect these dates. The listed daily opening hours are 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. During opening hours, everyone can use the facilities for a fee. If time at the beach is important to your trip, take the scheduled period and the possibility of weather-related changes into account when planning.
