Church Architecture and Local History

The Szűz Mária Neve templom stands on a hill above the main road. The east-facing building has a western tower and an elongated chancel, which is narrower than the nave and has a straight end. The sacristy is located at the northeast corner, with an entrance vestibule on the south side. On the north side of the nave is the Szent-András Chapel: it is oriented north–south and has a polygonal end. The church and chapel thus have two different orientations within the architectural ensemble.

A chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary is documented in 1339 in Alsódörögd, present-day Taliándörögd; a stone church is mentioned there in 1347. Another notable building is the Roman Catholic presbytery at Kossuth utca 30. It is L-shaped and late Baroque.

Landscape, Culture and Cycling

The 323-metre-high Tik-hegy lies in the western part of the Dörögd Basin and provides shade for Taliándörögd. The mountain is therefore a distinctive feature of the local landscape. Together with the church on the hill above the main road, it shows how buildings and terrain shape the townscape in different ways.

Culture is another specific local attraction. For more than two decades, the LéleKzet Református Udvar has been a recurring festival venue for Művészetek Völgye. From 24 July to 2 August, it offered opportunities for collaborative creative activities, an exhibition by textile artist Richter Sára, and performances by, among others, the Gryllus testvérek, Zsongom, Rajkai Zoltán, Balla Gergely, Vecsei H. Miklós, and the Cimbali Band with Herczku Ágnes.

The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town that has so far been explored for 14.6 kilometres.

At Hegyestű, a 337-metre-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló, the inside of a basalt volcano that was active around 8 million years ago has been exposed. From the viewpoint on the western edge of the quarry grounds, visitors can identify the surrounding hills with the help of a panoramic information board. A rock garden displays characteristic rock types from Transdanubia, the western half of Hungary. These geological themes offer a different focus from Taliándörögd’s architectural history.

In Herend, porcelain and craftsmanship take centre stage: the Herend Porcelain Museum features a permanent exhibition and changing exhibitions on the history of the manufactory. The visitor centre introduces porcelain production, techniques and traditions of applied art. In workshops at the mini-manufactory, visitors can handle porcelain clay and a brush to paint. Families travelling with children will also find a hands-on activity at the Dinosaur Park in Veszprém Zoo: children can take part in a real archaeological excavation, complemented by lifelike dinosaur models.
