Architecture and museum history

The Szegedy-Róza House is a building dating from 1790, built in the peasant Baroque style and now serving as a museum. One notable detail is the fireplace, by which the poet wrote his stories. Architecture and a literary history passed down through the years come together here: the house tells the story not only of an architectural style, but also preserves the memory of a specific place of literary creation.

A different architectural character can be found in the twin-towered Roman Catholic Church of Saint Emeric in Badacsonytomaj. It was built in 1931–1932 to designs by Fábián Gáspár and is considered the only church in Central Europe built from basalt. Basalt is therefore the defining feature that sets this church apart from a more conventional example of church architecture. If you are interested in architectural history, the Szegedy-Róza House highlights peasant Baroque, while the church is notable for its basalt construction.

The former home of Egry József near the harbour has also been renovated and serves as a museum. It adds an artist’s story to the two distinct architectural and cultural histories. Together, the houses and the church offer several separate cultural themes, rather than focusing on just one attraction.

Nature, learning and gardens

The Badacsony Geological and Botanical Nature Trail introduces visitors to natural topics through bilingual information boards. The subjects range from geology and geomorphology to botany and zoology. The boards also cover traditional, nature-friendly forms of land use that are characteristic of the area. The trail therefore explores both the landscape’s natural features and how people interact with it. A guided tour with an expert from the Balaton Uplands National Park Directorate is available on request.

At the Folly Arboretum in Badacsonyörs, you can enjoy a different perspective on nature: the grounds cover 3.6 hectares and feature a collection consisting mostly of evergreen plants. When planning your day, you can choose between learning about geological, botanical and zoological values on a themed trail and exploring the arboretum’s plant collection. Guided garden walks are also held regularly at the Folly Arboretum throughout the year. They are among the arboretum’s recurring and popular programmes.

Winegrowing and guided tastings

Winegrowing is another possible focus of your stay. The Viticulture and Oenology Research Institute of the Agricultural Sciences Centre at the University of Pannonia is a stop on the Badacsony Wine Route. Vineyard and cellar tours, as well as wine tastings, are available there by prior arrangement. Planning ahead is essential: these activities expressly require you to get in touch beforehand.

Hableány also offers guided winery tours and wine tastings by prior arrangement. Both include tastings, but the tours differ in what they cover: at the research institute, they include the vineyard and cellar, while Hableány offers a guided tour of the winery.
