Roman traces and architectural history

Significant remains of a Roman fortification, or castrum, can be found on Kishegy. Within the municipality, Roman watchtowers, a camp, a cemetery and traces of settlements are also among the most significant archaeological remains. The Roman name of the town was Ad Herculem. Together, these varied finds show that Pilismarót’s Roman history is not limited to a single building: fortifications, watchtowers and traces of settlements and burials represent different aspects of the Roman presence at the time.

A later chapter in the town’s history is represented by the late Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, created around 1800. The former Heckenast manor house offers a different architectural impression: it was built around 1860 in the Romantic style and is a protected monument. The statue and manor house thus belong to different periods and architectural styles. Those interested in cultural history will find more in Pilismarót than just Roman remains to explore.

Waterways and viewpoints nearby

The waters also help describe the town’s location. The outflow from the Miklós-deák-völgyi Lakes runs through the outskirts of Pilismarót, in the westernmost valley of the Visegrád Mountains. Within the town, it joins the Malom Stream, which continues on to the Danube. This makes it possible to trace the connection from the valley, along a local stream, to the great river.

The Hoffmann Spring is one of Pilismarót’s notable natural features. For a sweeping view, head to Hirsch-rom: this viewpoint in the Maróti Hill Group is 451 metres above sea level and offers a panoramic vista. The spring and the viewpoint appeal to different interests: one is a natural feature, the other offers views over the surrounding area. When planning your holiday, you can therefore consider whether you would like to focus more on the landscape or on historic sites.

Walks with different destinations

For a walk, the loess hills of Bitóc lead to the Basaharc Valley or to Vaskapu above Esztergom. These two destinations give the outing a clear direction: you can choose the valley as your destination or head towards Vaskapu. Another route leads from Malom-völgy via Hosszú-hegy to Dobogókő. These place names help distinguish between different destinations without combining them into a single route. If you would like to include trails and viewpoints in your trip alongside historic sights, these destinations offer specific options to consider.

A historical look at the Danube riverbank

The town’s leisure history is also connected with the Danube. In the 1930s, the so-called “Gold Coast” was established on the riverbank, where there was a popular beach. A holiday colony was built nearby. This history adds a glimpse of how the riverbank was used at the time to the Roman and architectural heritage. It belongs specifically to the 1930s and is therefore a historical part of the town’s story.

If you are looking for a place to stay with archaeological history, a protected historic building and destinations for walks, you can weigh up different interests in Pilismarót. The Roman remains offer a different focus from the view at Hirsch-rom or the trails through Bitóc. You can also explore Tát, Nyergesújfalu, Dömös, Lábatlan, Esztergom and Kertvaros for more places to visit.
