Kertvaros: Trails, Architecture and City Views

Kertvaros brings together sacred architecture, public art and trails with a specific destination. On Szent Tamás Hill, a special Stations of the Cross leads to the Fájdalmas-Szűz Chapel; from there, a panoramic view opens up over the city. There is also the listed Vízivárosi Church and a sculpture on Várhegy. Culture and Trails in Esztergom

The Esztergom Basilica can be reached by road, by boat, by bicycle and by bus. Esztergom is also home to the Vízivárosi Church, an outstanding example of Italian Baroque architecture. The listed building was renovated in 2012. The church’s character offers a distinct cultural point of interest: its Italian Baroque architecture sets it apart as a building, while the renovation marks a specific chapter in its recent history.

Szent Tamás Hill offers another way to combine architecture and movement. A special Stations of the Cross leads up the hill to the Fájdalmas-Szűz Chapel. The view from the chapel stretches over the city, making the trail’s destination a viewpoint as well. If you like to give your outings a clear destination, you can treat this trail as a separate item on your itinerary; no walking time is provided.

Art and history also meet on Várhegy: the sculpture “Szent István megkoronázása” by Melocco Miklós stands on its northern bastion. It depicts the coronation of Stephen, the first king of Hungary. Its specific subject helps put the artwork in context and gives it a different emphasis from the Stations of the Cross or the Baroque church.

For a walk with a stated length and duration, the Strázsa-hegyi nature trail is located near Esztergom-Kertváros. The circular trail is 1,200 metres long, and the estimated walking time is about one hour. This approximate time provides a guide for planning your day.

Komorn-Gran: a broader regional setting

The broader destination of Komorn-Gran also includes the Gerecsei Tájvédelmi Körzet, a nationally significant, officially designated protected landscape area in Komárom-Esztergom covering 8,676 hectares. Triassic limestone predominates in the Gerecse, alongside Jurassic limestone, which is particularly rich in fossils. As well as its size, the protected landscape area therefore has a geological focus. The Majki Kamalduli Remeteség forms a distinct historic monument ensemble: the Baroque complex comprises seventeen hermit cells, a church tower and a monastery. An exhibition explores the general and Hungarian history of the Camaldolese Order. The site is open Tuesday to Sunday: from 1 April to 31 October, 10:00–18:00; from 1 November to 31 March, 09:00–17:00. As opening hours may change, it is advisable to check them before your visit.

The Bábolna Nemzeti Ménesbirtok also offers a range of experiences with different focuses. A guided tour begins with an exhibition on the stud farm’s history and continues in the Ménesudvar. The “Fogat bemutató, ménfelvezetés” programme features four-, five- and two-horse teams; visitors can try these historic means of transport for themselves. Advance booking is required for the programme. Carriage rides to the nearby arboretum, pulled by two Shagya Arabian mares, are also offered; these too must be booked in advance.

Further destinations in the broader Komorn-Gran area offer archaeological and military history. The Brigetio Öröksége Látogatóközpont houses an interactive permanent archaeological exhibition featuring finds from excavations at Brigetio. Monostori Erőd is a military monument within the Komárom fortress system. Exhibitions and staged scenes illustrate the periods of the Monarchy, the world wars and the Soviet occupation. The fortress system in the territories of the two Komároms is on UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage sites.
