The Gerecse Landscape and Virtual Walks
The Gerecsei Tájvédelmi Körzet (Gerecse Landscape Protection Area) is a nationally significant, individually designated protected landscape in Komárom-Esztergom. It covers 8,676 hectares. The geological character of the Gerecse is also remarkable: Triassic limestone predominates, alongside Jurassic limestone, which is particularly rich in fossils. Anyone interested in the history of the Earth will find a different way to explore the region here than in its museums and historic sites.
There are 19 virtual walks available to download in the Duna-Gerecse tourism region. They are available in Hungarian, German, English and Slovak, and work offline. Cycling Along the Által-ér
The route along the Által-ér makes it easy and safe to connect Tata, Vértesszőlős and Tatabánya by bike. It offers a practical point of reference for anyone planning to explore the area by bicycle. Monasteries, a Fortress and Roman Finds
The Majki Kamalduli Remeteség is a Baroque monument complex comprising seventeen hermit cells, a church tower and a monastery. An exhibition is devoted to the general and Hungarian history of the Camaldolese order. It has set opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00 from 1 April to 31 October, and 09:00–17:00 from 1 November to 31 March.
Another historical highlight is the Monostori Erőd, a military monument in Komárom’s fortification system. Exhibitions and staged scenes illustrate the eras of the Monarchy, the world wars and the Soviet occupation. The fortification system extends across both Komároms and is on UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites. At the Brigetio Öröksége Látogatóközpont, a permanent interactive archaeological exhibition brings together finds from the excavations at Brigetio.
Stud-Farm Experiences in Bábolna
At the Bábolna Nemzeti Ménesbirtok, a guided tour begins with an exhibition on the history of the stud farm and continues in the Ménesudvar. This provides a historical introduction before the tour continues there. Those interested in carriages can consider a ride to the nearby arboretum: two carriages drawn by Shagya Arabian mares are available, and advance booking is required.
The “Fogat bemutató, ménfelvezetés” programme presents four-, five- and two-horse teams. Visitors can try these historic means of transport for themselves. The exhibition, guided tour and carriage programme each offer a different focus; you can choose between them depending on whether you would like to learn more about the stud farm’s history or experience the teams firsthand.
