Esztergom: Basilica, Museums and City History
Accommodation in Esztergom
Esztergom can be explored through a wide range of cultural themes: the basilica sets a benchmark for sacred architecture, museums cover everything from water management to city history, and a walk up Szent Tamás Hill leads to the Fájdalmas Szűz Chapel. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, this mix of themes can help you decide what to focus on. First consider whether you would like to spend more time on architecture, exhibitions or a walk with a specific destination. Then check the accommodation’s location in relation to the places you plan to visit.
Basilica, Churches and Ottoman Heritage
Esztergom Basilica is Hungary’s largest church building. It is 100 metres tall, measured from the lower level of the crypt to the finial of the dome. The Szent Anna Plébániatemplom, known as Kerektemplom, offers another way to explore church architecture: its floor plan is completely circular, with a high central dome rising above the nave. Here, the focus is not on the basilica’s dimensions, but on the circular ground plan and the dome.
The Loyolai-Szent-Ignác Church in Víziváros was consecrated in 1738 by Bishop Mihály Althann of Vác. The Esztergom Mosque, also known as the Özicseli-Hadzsi-Ibrahim Mosque, reveals another architectural and historical chapter. It is a prominent monument of Ottoman architecture on the banks of the Danube and is closely linked to Esztergom’s history. Together, these sites invite you to include religious architecture and the city’s diverse historical influences in your explorations.
Museums: Water Management, City History and Art
At the Duna Múzeum, the permanent exhibition Vízeum explores the past and present of water management. The permanent exhibition at the Balassa Bálint Museum takes a different approach, covering the history of Esztergom and its surroundings from prehistoric times to the 20th century. This lets you choose between a thematic look at water management and a broad historical overview of the city and its surroundings.
The collection of the Christian Museum is housed on the second floor of the Primatial Palace in Esztergom. At Esztergom Basilica, the suite of rooms known as Panorámaterem is used for exhibitions, discussions, lectures, concerts and children’s programmes. These are different forms of cultural use: the collection is the main focus at the museum, while the rooms of Panorámaterem are intended for various types of events.
The Castle Museum also offers a closer look at the past. As an affiliate of the Hungarian National Museum, it welcomes visitors. Visitors can walk across a glass floor beneath which lie 2,000-year-old archaeological layers. The view of these layers connects the museum visit with a vivid experience of archaeological history.
Walks and Historic Sites
If you would like to combine a walk with a cultural destination, you can follow the seven-section Calvary Stairway on Szent Tamás Hill. It leads from the junction of Batthyány Lajos utca and Basa utca to the Fájdalmas Szűz Chapel. This route can therefore be planned as a separate activity alongside visits to churches and exhibitions.
On the northern bastion of Castle Hill stands a 12-metre-high sculpture by Miklós Melocco. It depicts the coronation of Saint Stephen, the first king of Hungary. Another historical detail is the Einczinger-sütőház: it was Esztergom’s oldest known bakery and was located in this house for more than 200 years.
At the southern end of Erzsébet Park, by the bridgehead of Kossuth Bridge, stands a bronze bust of Queen Elisabeth of Hungary. The history of crossings between Esztergom and Párkány also dates back to Roman times. These historical connections complement the churches and museums with public commemorative sites and the long history of the link between the two places.
