Church and Monument History

In Pusztasomorja, the Roman Catholic church is named after Saint Stephen, King of Hungary. Between 1713 and 1735, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style on the site of an earlier medieval church. Several periods of history thus come together here: the medieval church that came before it and the later reconstruction.

The Hármashalom Monument commemorates a different period in history. It was inaugurated on 30 May 1937 and was originally intended to honour the residents who fell in the First World War. The church and the monument therefore represent distinct historical themes that you can explore separately as you learn about the town’s history.

Local Traditions and Events

The Saint Stephen’s Day festival in Somorja is one of Jánossomorja’s old local traditions. The Péter-Pál-napi búcsú is another: it is the shared feast day of the town’s two larger districts. For several years, the May Day festival on 1 May has drawn strong participation from residents.

The Nagyerdei Ifjúsági Találkozó is a different kind of event. Held annually over three days, the gathering brings together regional youth associations and clubs, with young people travelling from across the county to attend. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the specific dates in advance.

These different occasions can help you decide what to focus on during your trip. You can use them to guide your search for a holiday apartment: would you like to focus mainly on local history, travel for a particular festival or discover the city wines? Your choice will shape which dates and experiences you put at the heart of your plans.

City Wine and Getting There

Since 2022, Jánossomorja’s municipal administration has selected the city wines each year. The wines selected for each year can be sampled at several shops and some restaurants in town. As the selection changes from year to year, this wine experience is closely tied to the particular year’s selection.

More to Explore in the Greater Győr-Moson-Sopron Destination

The wider Győr-Moson-Sopron destination offers more cultural and natural attractions. The Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma was founded in 996. The World Heritage property of the Archabbey and its natural surroundings includes the monastic complex, basilica, educational buildings, the Chapel of Our Lady, the Millennium Chapel, and botanical and herb gardens. In Fertőd, Esterházy Palace is an outstanding example of Hungarian Baroque-Rococo palace architecture.

The landscape offers its own points of interest: the Fertő/Neusiedler See cultural landscape encompasses Eurasia’s westernmost steppe lake, as well as wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and lakeshore areas. Lake Neusiedl forms the core of Fertő-Hanság National Park; its Hungarian section has been protected since 1977. The Fertő-táj cultural landscape was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status on 13 December 2001.

For a view across this landscape, the Várhely lookout point offers vistas to the northeast of Sopron, Sopron-Bánfalva, Bécsi Hill, Lake Neusiedl and the Mosoni Plain. An electric boat trip on Lake Neusiedl offers the chance to see aquatic wildlife, reed warblers, great egrets, purple herons and various ducks; the trip explores reed channels and bays on the western side.
