Dunakiliti-Tejfalusziget: Danube branches, nature and culture

Dunakiliti-Tejfalusziget combines a water-rich landscape with nature experiences and traces of local history. The Old Danube, the Mosoni Danube and winding side channels shape the landscape. There are also opportunities for hiking, fishing and canoeing, as well as places where you can learn more about the village and the barrage.

Danube branches and activities on the water

The Kisrévi-Duna-ág runs alongside the built-up area of Dunakiliti. It is used for waterside recreation, angling and fishing. The Danube side channels within the municipality are also suitable for canoe trips and fishing. If you would like to include water activities in your holiday plans, there are several options: the Kisrévi-Duna-ág is connected to the built-up area, while canoe trips are mentioned for the side channels within the municipality.

Dunakiliti has been a Szigetköz Nature Park municipality since March 2018. The Kiserdei-Sétány introduces visitors to the flora and fauna of Szigetköz. This means you can combine a trip into nature with discovering its wildlife, rather than focusing exclusively on activities on the water.

Walks and hikes

For those who enjoy getting around on foot, Dunakiliti offers opportunities for walks and hikes in quiet, natural surroundings. The 3.7 km Fenékküszöb Tour is presented as a family activity and hike.

The Pintér Bridge is presented as a footbridge in an attractive natural landscape. Together with the Kiserdei-Sétány and the Fenékküszöb Tour, it offers a range of nature and walking options: a trail introducing the flora and fauna of Szigetköz, a designated tour and a footbridge in natural surroundings.

Church, village history and tradition

The Neo-Gothic Szent-Kereszt-Felmagasztalása-Templom in Dunakiliti is decorated inside with frescoes and colourful pointed-arch windows, including rose-coloured glass windows. The Millennium Oak, planted in 1896, stands in front of the church. In summer, it provides shade for visitors resting there. Construction of the Szent-Mihály Chapel in Tejfalusziget, a settlement belonging to Dunakiliti, began in 1935 as a family chapel.

Another historical highlight is Batthyány Castle, built between 1858 and 1862 in the early Historicist style. The Falumúzeum focuses on rural village life in the past, displaying tools accompanied by written explanations. Those interested in local traditions can also find a regular event at Szigetköz Lelke Pálinkaház: a pálinka festival with a competition for people who have commissioned a distillation is held there every year.

The barrage and its visitor centre

The Dunakiliti barrage lies 2 to 3 km outside the village, within its administrative territory, and is recommended as a place worth visiting. A bridge over the unfinished barrage offers visitors an impressive view. The visitor centre is located in the barrage’s operations building. It was established as part of the Insula Magna project and handed over in autumn 2023.

The visitor centre features thematic maps and information panels, as well as scale models at 1:100. They depict the Dunakiliti barrage with its ship lock and the power plant at Bős, also with its ship lock. The exhibition is complemented by an interactive visualisation table with a touchscreen and two interactive kiosk tablets, also with touchscreens. This makes the visit especially interesting if you are interested in hydraulic engineering and the technical facilities on the Danube.
