Manor House, Church and Remembrance

Built in 1756, the manor house is Baroque and listed as a historic monument. It was probably remodelled and extended in the 19th century. Thus, a precisely dated construction and a later, merely probable phase of alteration sit side by side, offering a vivid insight into the village’s architectural history.

The history of the Church of Our Lady of the Visitation (Sarlós Boldogasszony) can also be told through a specific event: on 30 July 1868, a fire destroyed its tower and roof. The cathedral chapter restored the church shortly afterwards. Beside the church stands a carved memorial post commemorating Áron Tamási, a Kossuth Prize laureate and Hungarian writer. The church’s architectural history and literary remembrance thus meet in one place.

Várhegy and Choosing Where to Stay

The 262-metre-high Várhegy rises just south of the village. This named landscape feature adds a clear connection to the surrounding area to the village’s history. The manor house, church and hill offer different points of interest as you consider which local themes you would like to shape your stay. Searching for a holiday rental with Sajógalgóc as your destination puts the village itself centre stage.

More to Explore in the Wider Destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén

The wider destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén offers a broad range of themes, from caves and landscapes to architecture and wine culture. The Baradla–Domica Cave System is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst. The short Aggtelek Cave Tour is one kilometre long, takes 60 minutes and is rated easy. An educational trail connects the Aggtelek and Jósvafő entrances to Baradla Cave, highlighting natural and cultural-historical values. Another regional highlight is the Hucul herd grazing in the pastures of Gergés-lápa, about 1.5 kilometres north of Jósvafő; it can be viewed there all year round.

The Zemplén Landscape Protection Area is part of the Zemplén Mountains; the area’s landscape influences its plant and animal life. In Lillafüred, a nature trail introduces local historical sights and natural features. For a different kind of nature experience, the nature trail at Miskolc Zoo and Cultural Park features a nine-metre-high observation tower and a 32-metre-long suspension bridge. The parks of Miskolctapolca form an arboretum with numerous native species and include a boating lake with several small islands. These examples offer different perspectives, from learning about nature to elevated viewpoints and parkland.

The region also has a varied architectural history. Diósgyőr Castle flourished under King Louis the Great in the 14th century; later, it served as a residence and a wedding gift for six queens. In Sárospatak, the Reformed College preserves treasures of Hungarian Protestant culture, while the Basilica of St Elizabeth and the House of St Elizabeth bring the medieval world to life. Viticulture and cellars add to these cultural themes: the climate, soil quality and slope exposure of the Tokaj wine region are suitable for growing grapes, and the wine region is legally protected. The Ungvári cellar labyrinth in Sátoraljaújhely connects at least 27 cellars across an area of 50,000 square metres. Beneath the park of Rákóczi Castle in Sárospatak lies a cellar complex about 2,000 metres long, with two wine-tasting rooms.
