Aiani represents two very different historical narratives: the Byzantine Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary and the ancient city of Aiani, once the capital of one of Upper Macedonia’s most powerful kingdoms. The church is also known as Panagia of Aiani. Its trefoil windows and brick-layered masonry define its architectural appearance.

Ancient City, Museum and Architecture

In the wider Kozani destination, the Archaeological Museum of Aiani presents finds from ancient Aiani and the Royal Necropolis in six galleries. The exhibition spans from prehistoric times to the Roman period. Finds from excavations in the ancient city shed light on its urban and political organisation, as well as its development during the Archaic and Classical periods.

The ancient settlement stood on the terraced, elevated and naturally fortified hill of Megali Rachi. This historic settlement site should be distinguished from modern Aiani. Nearby, within the destination, lies the ancient Necropolis of Aiani, with excavated tombs and grave goods dating from the Late Bronze Age to the Late Hellenistic period. These places and finds help put different periods of the past into context.

The Archaeological Museum of Aiani lists educational programmes and multimedia offerings, as well as a ramp, lift, Braille signs, tactile materials and an accessible toilet. Please confirm details of the offerings and facilities before your visit.

The Lazarines customs are also part of Aiani’s cultural history. An article on Greek cultural heritage records rituals in several communities, including Aiani. Girls and women performed spring rituals around Lazarus Saturday and Palm Sunday, with processions, dances and communal celebrations; participants in Aiani are documented in 2018. The festival cycle follows the Easter calendar.

Aiani and the Wider Kozani Destination

Within the wider Kozani destination, Aiani is the historic seat of the Municipality of Kozani. In the Aiani area, the Chandakas Trail passes through a green gorge with flowing streams, stone paths and small bridges, leading to a series of natural waterfalls. Trail conditions may vary seasonally. Alongside archaeology and architecture, this offers a distinct focus on the landscape.

In the city of Kozani itself, Vourkas Mansion is an example of secular architecture from the Ottoman period. The carefully restored Lassani Mansion houses the Municipal Map Library of Kozani, where visitors can explore a rare collection of maps of the Greek world. These cultural attractions add other themes within the wider destination to the picture of Aiani, without equating them with the sights in the town itself.

Saffron and wine tourism are also part of what the wider Kozani destination offers: the Cooperative of Saffron Producers of Kozani organises guided tours of saffron production. Wine tourism includes guided tours and tastings at local wineries. Seasonal packages, participating wineries and dates may change; check the latest details in advance.

When choosing a holiday rental, it helps to decide which focus matters most: Aiani offers ancient history, a museum and Byzantine architecture, while Kozani adds urban architecture, maps and guided saffron or wine experiences to the wider destination. If nature is your main interest, the Chandakas Trail in the Aiani area is another option described here. Choose your search location according to which of these themes you want to shape your trip.
