Discover Koila: Church, History and Routes
Accommodation in Koila
Discover Koila’s history through a particular building and the development of the town’s name. At its heart is the church dedicated to the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, whose two bell towers are a distinctive architectural feature. Construction began in 1938. The war of 1940 interrupted the work; it was completed in the 1950s. The central church thus combines a striking feature of the town with a building history spanning several decades.
Koila’s local history and road connections
Koila’s name also tells a story of changing historical designations. During Ottoman rule, the town was called Islamlí and belonged to the Eğri Bucak toparchy, based in Drepanon. Later, the village was called Limnades. It eventually received its present name, which is thought to refer to its location in a valley.
The road connections can also help you choose a location: Koila lies on a road connecting the city of Kozani with the Egnatia Odos, Ptolemaida and Florina. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether this road connection suits the destinations you want to include in your travel plans. The specific places on your itinerary will determine which location makes sense for you.
The West Macedonia Exhibition Centre is also located in the Koila area. The 34th West Macedonia Trade, Craft and Agricultural Fair was announced for 23–27 September 2026, with free admission for the public. These dates refer to that announced edition.
A closer look at the destination of Kozani
Aiani, the historic seat of the Municipality of Kozani, is part of the wider destination of Kozani. Archaeological evidence also identifies Aiani as the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Elimeia. The Archaeological Museum of Aiani displays finds from ancient Aiani and the Royal Necropolis in six galleries. Its collection spans the prehistoric period through to Roman times. The Royal Necropolis served as the burial place of the kings of Aiani during the Classical and Hellenistic periods and comprises twelve monumental chamber tombs. The museum and necropolis offer different perspectives: the long span of archaeological finds and the distinctive royal burial site.
The architecture and churches of the wider destination offer further historical highlights. The Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos of Aiani dates from the late 11th to early 12th century. The sanctuary of the Church of Agios Dimitrios in Aiani preserves an inscription bearing the names of monks. In Kozani, Vourkas Mansion is an example of secular architecture from the Ottoman period. The carefully restored Lassani Mansion houses the Municipal Map Library of Kozani, where visitors can explore a rare collection of maps of the Greek world.
Other collections focus on different subjects: The Archaeological Collection of Kozani presents finds from prehistoric times through to the Roman period and also displays artefacts from Kozani’s Classical-period cemetery. The Museum of the Pontic Hellenism explores everyday life among the Pontians through traditional costumes, agricultural tools and household items; visits are by prior arrangement. The Nikos Kalogeropoulos Museum of Contemporary Local History preserves material from 1940 to 1947.
Landscapes, traditions and regional experiences
Those wishing to include nature in their visit to the destination of Kozani can find the Chandakas Trail in the Aiani area. It runs through a green gorge with flowing streams, stone paths and small bridges, leading to a series of natural waterfalls. Trail conditions can vary by season, so checking conditions before your visit can be helpful when planning.
Regional traditions and products add to the picture. The Kozani Carnival features Fanoi bonfires, music, singing and dancing; dates and events may vary. Guided tours of Kozani saffron production are organised by the Cooperative of Saffron Producers of Kozani. Wine tourism in Kozani includes guided tours and tastings at local wineries; participating wineries and dates may change. These subjects differ markedly from Koila’s local history and offer further points to consider when deciding which aspects of the destination of Kozani you want to shape your trip.
