Kozani: Ancient History, Architecture and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Kozani
Kozani combines archaeological history, architectural heritage and an impressive natural experience. Aiani, the historic seat of the Municipality of Kozani, brings the past of the ancient Kingdom of Elimeia to life; Kozani itself adds mansions, museums and traditions to this picture. The Chandakas Trail offers a different perspective on the region in the area around Aiani, focusing on a gorge, streams and waterfalls. These different highlights can help you choose a holiday rental based on the experiences that interest you most.
Aiani: archaeological history and the Chandakas Trail
The Archaeological Museum of Aiani displays finds from ancient Aiani and the Royal Necropolis in six galleries. The exhibition spans the prehistoric period through to Roman times. The history of the place is also evident beyond the collection: Aiani was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Elimeia. Excavations at the Archaeological Site of Aiani – Ancient City uncovered, among other things, a large central reservoir that supplied the city with water. In the area, you can discover both the region’s broad historical development and tangible evidence of everyday life in antiquity.
The Royal Necropolis of Aiani served as the burial place of the kings of Aiani during the Classical and Hellenistic periods. It includes twelve monumental chamber tombs. The Chandakas Trail offers a contrasting landscape: it passes through a green gorge with flowing streams, stone paths and small bridges, leading to a series of natural waterfalls. Conditions on the trail may vary seasonally; check them before your hike.
Mansions, collections and churches in Kozani
Historic buildings and museums in Kozani tell different parts of the city’s story. Vourkas Mansion is an example of secular architecture from the Ottoman period. The carefully restored Lassani Mansion houses the Municipal Map Library of Kozani, whose rare map collection depicts the Greek world. These places offer different ways to explore history: through the architecture of a mansion and through maps and their portrayal of regions.
The Archaeological Collection of Kozani also spans a broad period, with finds ranging from prehistoric times to the Roman era. It also includes artefacts from Kozani’s Classical-period cemetery. At the Museum of the Pontic Hellenism, traditional costumes, agricultural tools and household objects offer insights into everyday Pontian life; visits are by prior arrangement. The “Nikos Kalogeropoulos” Museum of Contemporary Local History preserves material from 1940 to 1947.
Historic buildings also include the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos of Aiani, dating from the late 11th to early 12th century, and the Church of Agios Dimitrios in Aiani. An inscription bearing the names of monks is preserved in its sanctuary. Together with the archaeological sites, these places offer several different themes for sightseeing, so you do not have to limit yourself to a single period.
Fanoi, saffron and wine
The Kozani Carnival is known for its “Fanoi” fires, which involve bonfires, music, singing and dancing. Dates and programme may vary. Guided tours of Kozani saffron production, organised by the Cooperative of Saffron Producers of Kozani, offer further insights into local products. Seasonal arrangements may change. Wine tourism also includes guided tours and tastings at local wineries; participating wineries and dates may vary. Check the current options before including these activities in your plans.
If you would like to combine several themes, take these options into account when choosing your holiday rental, and check current museum opening hours.
