Pýli: Bridges, History and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Pýli
The Portaikos flows through Pýli. Six bridges close together along the river date from different periods between 1514 and 2014; their construction styles vary. Together, they form Pýli’s bridge park. This combination of river, structures and long time spans gives the town a distinctive theme to explore: you can focus on individual constructions as well as the differences between them.
Bridges and Architectural History
Near Pýli is the Bridge of Saint Vissarion. It has a single arch with a semicircular opening; it is 30 metres high and has a span of 29 metres. Among the traditional bridges of Thessaly, its span is the second largest. The Church of Porta Panagia, also near Pýli, offers another glimpse into history: it was built in 1283 as the katholikon of the stavropegial Monastery of the Great Gates. In the surrounding area, you will encounter both remarkable bridge designs and a medieval monastic structure.
Hiking Destinations and Climbing
Three hiking trails have specific starting and ending points. One leads from Platanos Square to the ancient Athenaion Fort, while another runs from the same square to Profitis Ilias on Itamos. A third trail begins opposite the arched bridge of Pýli and also leads to Athenaion Fort. This gives you a choice of two named destinations; two trails to Athenaion Fort start from different points. Access to the fort is difficult. Take this into account when planning and check current accessibility before setting out.
Those interested in climbing will find a climbing area established in 1996 on the Koziakas side of Pýli’s arched bridge. It has 15 routes graded from 7c− to 8a+. The number of routes and grades may change. Hiking and climbing therefore offer different focuses: the hiking trails have named destinations and starting points, while the grades provide an indication of the climbing routes.
A pedestrian bridge is another local landmark: it is 120 metres long and two metres wide, and leads to the site of Pýli’s former settlement. Its dimensions and destination make it a distinct, clearly defined point among the town’s historical features.
Local History and Wine
Pýli was formerly called Porta Pazar. Another historical reference is the Battle of Porta, which took place on 8 and 9 June 1943 against Italian occupying forces. The Municipality of Pýli holds two-day commemorative ceremonies honouring the battle. The town’s history thus spans an earlier name and the remembrance of a specific event in the 20th century.
Guests can taste traditional wines at Κελάρι Περγαντή in Pýli. If you plan to visit, check in advance what is currently available. The tasting adds a culinary note alongside the town’s structures, hiking destinations and historical themes.
