Tríkala offers several reasons to plan your stay around your own interests: cycling routes run along the Litheos, and its green banks invite you to enjoy quiet moments. Varousi is the old town, the Tsitsanis Museum explores musical history, and the Matsopoulos Mill is a seasonal highlight. Together, these places reveal different sides of the city—from time by the river to history and festive experiences.

Litheos: Activity and quiet moments

Cycling routes run along the Litheos, while its green banks invite you to enjoy quiet moments. This lets you experience the river both actively and as a place to take a break. The routes offer an active way to spend your time, while the banks provide a quieter contrast. Since the status of the routes may change, it is worth checking the latest information before setting out.

Between the ancient city and the old town

The ancient city of Trikka stretched from the northern bank of the Litheos to the hill of the Byzantine castle. Because the area has been continuously inhabited, few traces of the ancient city are visible. Varousi is the old town of Tríkala and offers another historical point of reference. The clock tower also serves as a landmark: it is visible from almost everywhere in Tríkala. Together, these different reference points present the city’s history from several urban and historical perspectives, rather than reducing it to a single monument.

For your initial orientation, head to the pedestrianised section of Asklipiou Street, south of the Litheos. Many visitors begin exploring Tríkala there. The street can serve as a starting point before you turn to other aspects of the city, such as the green riverbanks, the old town or its musical history.

Manavika and its development

The Manavika neighbourhood lies north of the Litheos. With the opening of restaurants, mezedopoleia and bars, it developed into another centre of social life in Tríkala. The city’s neighbourhoods therefore reflect two distinct aspects: Varousi is the old town, while Manavika is associated with its development as a social hub. If you are interested in the city’s neighbourhoods, you can take these differences into account as you explore.

Tsitsanis and the Matsopoulos Mill

The Tsitsanis Research Centre and Museum celebrates the work of Vasilis Tsitsanis, an influential Greek Laïkó composer of the 20th century. It is located on the upper floor of a distinctive building in Tríkala. Exhibits include his biography, photographs, musical instruments and personal belongings. Audiovisual material complements the collection, including sheet music and records featuring original recordings of his songs. The exhibition themes therefore include both biographical insights and music and recordings.

The Matsopoulos Mill also has a special history: it was Greece’s first industrial flour mill and the largest in the Balkans. Every year, the Christmas park “Ο Μύλος των Ξωτικών” is held there for more than a month. This festive experience is for children and adults and, as a seasonal attraction, differs from the city’s historical and urban themes. If you plan to visit the Christmas park, check the programme for that season before your trip.

Planning your stay and holiday apartment

When looking for a holiday apartment, first consider what you want your stay to focus on: cycling and quiet moments by the Litheos, city history and music, or the seasonal Christmas park. If the park is part of your plans, you should also take the programme for that season into account.
