Neraïdochóri: Mountain Village, Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Neraïdochóri
At an altitude of 1,140 metres, on the slopes of Koziakas, Neraïdochóri is a mountain village where trails meet tangible local history. The Vlachostrata, a monastery, churches and chapels, a stone watermill and routes through the surrounding area offer different points of interest. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Neraïdochóri, you can consider whether summit trails, the village’s history or both should shape your stay.
Mountain Village and the Vlachostrata
Neraïdochóri, formerly called Veternikon and Chatzipetrion, is in the Trikala regional unit. In the lower part of the village, the Vlachostrata runs through the settlement. Its name derives from “the Vlach road.” One section of the Vlachostrata runs along the edge of a gorge. The stone arch bridge of Neraïdochóri and a section of the old Vlachostrata are designated monuments. The village’s history thus brings together a traditional road name and tangible structures.
Mountain Trails and River Courses
Trail 212 is the shortest ascent route from the upper part of the village to the 2,074-metre summit of Neraida. Another option leads to Marosa: the route starts at the bridge below the village and is considered the easiest ascent to the summit. These descriptions give you different destinations to consider when planning an active day. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
The surrounding area has hiking trails and mountain-bike routes in the NATURA 2000 area. If you prefer to get around on foot, you can follow the hiking trails; for a ride by bike, there are mountain-bike routes. Check specific trail details and conditions separately.
A section of the route from Pertouli to Neraïdochóri runs alongside the river, crosses it several times and eventually reaches the Hatzipetros Bridge below the village. The bridge lies about two kilometres southeast of Neraïdochóri and spans the Pertouliotiko just before its confluence with the Korbos. The bridge thus connects two clear landmarks in the landscape: the river course and the village the route leads to.
Religious Buildings and Memorials
Sites open to visitors include the Monastery of Saint Paraskevi, also known as Moni Tsoukas, the Church of Saint Nicholas, and the chapels of Saint Panteleimon and the Prophet Elias. A bust depicts Christodoulos Hatzipetros, a fighter in 1821. The sites and the monument offer different points of interest: alongside religious buildings, you will also encounter a memorial to a historical figure.
The Stone Watermill
A stone watermill stands by the river in Neraïdochóri. It was formerly used to process food and was also equipped with tools and mechanisms for operating as a fulling mill. It is no longer in use.
When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: should the ascent to the summit or one of the routes in the surrounding area shape your day, or would you rather spend more time exploring the Vlachostrata, religious buildings and the history of the mill? Neraïdochóri offers two different ways to experience a stay in a mountain village: getting out and about and discovering the area, and exploring the village’s cultural history.
