Melanes – Green Valley and Ancient Kouroi
Accommodation in Melanes
Melanes combines a green valley with impressive traces of antiquity. Orchards and terraces shape the landscape; in the hills south of Flerio, paths lead to ancient marble quarries and oversized Kouroi. The phrygana around the village also gives the area its own character. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, these different sides of Melanes can help you choose the focus of your stay.
Valley, Terraces and Phrygana
The valley of Melanes is green and shaped by orchards and terraces. The terraces are irrigated by the natural flow of water from the spring at Flerio. French lavender (Lavandula stoechas) and rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) grow in their natural habitat in the phrygana landscape around Melanes. The landscape thus brings together a valley shaped by terraces and surroundings with native plants.
Melanes lies at an altitude of 63 metres, about eight kilometres southeast of Naxos Town. As a semi-mountainous settlement, it offers a distinct landscape setting within Naxos. When planning your holiday, it is helpful to distinguish between the different interests: the valley and phrygana are associated with nature and landscape, while the Kouroi, quarries and historic buildings tell the story of cultural history.
Kouroi and Archaeological Traces
Among the important monuments of Melanes are the ancient marble quarries and their oversized Kouroi near Flerio and Faraggi. A marked access path leads from the Kouros of Flerio to the Kouros of Faraggi and the surrounding quarries in the hills south of Flerio Melanes. Visitors can follow it; check local conditions before setting out.
Flerio is also closely associated with sculpture and the history of the springs. The first sculpture schools were located there; it is also home to the Kouros of Mélanes, dating from the 6th century BC, and the Sanctuary of the Springs. A small temple was discovered in Flerio during an excavation in 1997. It belonged to a sanctuary whose cult was connected with the springs and the surrounding quarries.
Another historical trace nearby is in Marmaroti: a complex of two traditional watermills dating from the 17th century. They were built to make use of the slope. In the wider region, the polis of Naxos had an aqueduct about eleven kilometres long built in the late 6th century BC. It supplied the ancient city with water and irrigated farmland along its route.
Paths Through the Village and Local Cuisine
Melanes can also be discovered while strolling through its lanes. Visitors can follow routes through nature and along the river. These paths complement the archaeological sites with impressions of the village landscape. You can also try traditional Naxian dishes in Melanes.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Melanes, you can consider which of these aspects interests you most: the green valley, the plant life of the phrygana, the ancient Kouroi and quarries, or the historical traces in the surrounding area. This lets you choose the village based on the experiences you want to shape your trip, without reducing landscape and cultural history to a single excursion theme.
