Tholaria brings together narrow lanes and whitewashed houses with a mountain landscape rich in flowers and herbs. Traditional cafés and tavernas are part of the village’s character, as are the hiking trails and ancient traces in the surrounding area. A stay here offers a choice of different impressions: the character of the village, the landscape and evidence of earlier settlements.

Lanes, Houses and a Landmark Visible from Afar

The narrow lanes and whitewashed houses give Tholaria its distinctive character. A special detail is the houses’ characteristic chimneys, which are covered with broken jugs. Terraces line the surrounding slopes and add to the impression of a place where buildings and hillside setting are closely connected.

The church of Agioi Anargyroi is also visible from afar. Its blue dome, two bell towers and dark red outlines make for striking architecture. As you explore Tholaria, you encounter not just a church as an individual attraction, but a landmark whose colors and shapes stand out clearly against the white houses. Together with the lanes and unusually designed chimneys, it defines the village’s visual character.

Mountain Scenery and Ancient Traces

The mountains around Tholaria are rich in flowers and herbs. Opposite the village lies the nearby ancient settlement of Ancient Aegiali, on the 212-meter-high Vigla Hill. From there, you can see the Mikri-Glifada Gorge. The setting combines a distinctive landscape with the history of the nearby settlement.

Vigla was the acropolis of its time; the largest sculpture from the Cycladic period was also found there. Today, only a few sections of wall remain at Ancient Aegiali. Other traces include rock carvings in the surrounding cliffs and statues from the Hellenistic period. The surviving remains are therefore varied, but should not be understood as a single, intact architectural complex: wall remains, rock carvings and statues each offer their own insights into the past.

Hiking Trails for Different Timeframes

The 4.5-kilometer Melania hiking trail connects Aegiali Bay, Lagada and Tholaria. Along the way, it passes ruins from the Early Cycladic period; the stated duration is two hours. Another hiking trail leads from Tholaria to the ancient settlement of Ancient Aegiali and takes about 15 minutes. The two time estimates can help you plan your day: one trail offers a longer hike, while the other is a shorter route to the archaeological site. They indicate different timeframes, not the difficulty of the trails.

Mikri Vlychada Beach is also one of the possible destinations in Tholaria, but it can only be reached on foot via a hiking trail. If you plan to visit, take this access requirement into account when organizing your day. The outings therefore differ not only in their destinations, but also in whether they involve a hike.

Choosing Tholaria as a Holiday Destination

When looking for a holiday apartment in Tholaria, start with the experiences you want to shape your vacation: would you like to focus on the lanes and traditional cafés and tavernas, discover the traces at Ancient Aegiali, or go on longer hikes? There is a hiking trail to the ancient settlement that takes about 15 minutes; the Melania Trail, at two hours, offers a very different timeframe. Mikri Vlychada also requires a hike.

Consider which destinations you want to include and how much time you plan to spend hiking before choosing a holiday apartment. If you are mainly looking for the village atmosphere, use the lanes, houses and local establishments as your guide; if you want to combine activity with history, you can include the trails and archaeological remains in your plans. This way, your choice of holiday apartment can reflect your interests in Tholaria, without every day of your vacation having to be the same.
