Apóllon combines the picturesque little harbor of Apollonas with ancient remains just outside the village and in the surrounding area. This makes the place appealing to travelers who appreciate a quiet swimming stop as much as monumental sculptures and traces of the past.

Harbor and Kouros: Different Experiences

Apollonas has a picturesque little harbor. The place is also suitable for a stopover for a quiet swim. This is a different way to spend the day from visiting an ancient monument: here, the focus is on a relaxed swimming break and the atmosphere at the harbor; there, on exploring sculptures and their history. For families interested in history, the monumental figures and their visible tool marks can provide an engaging starting point for conversation.

The colossal ancient marble Kouros of Apollo stands a few meters outside the entrance to the village of Apollonas. A connecting path leads between the settlement and the Kouros of Apollonas site; the Kouros near Apollonas can be reached on foot. If you set out on foot, check local conditions beforehand.

Unfinished Sculptures and Traces in the Stone

At the ancient quarry of Apollonas, you can see the unfinished 11-meter-high Kouros of Dionysus. The slopes of the quarry also contain numerous remains of other unfinished statues and architectural elements. Chisel marks and worked surfaces are also part of this site. They make the work on the stone visible as part of the experience: alongside the large Kouros, the shapes and traces left behind by working the quarry also catch the eye.

The two Kouros figures offer different points of interest. The Kouros of Apollo stands out as an ancient marble monument located a few meters outside the entrance to the village. The unfinished state of the Kouros of Dionysus, its height of 11 meters, and the traces in the quarry define its character. Visitors interested in ancient sculpture can make these differences a focus of their stay.

Ancient Sites and Festival Traditions

There are other historical points of interest in the surrounding area. Remains of an ancient harbor were found at Marmara. The ruins of the prehistoric fortress of Kalogeros are located on a hill above the bay. The harbor remains and fortress ruins tell different stories, offering distinct perspectives on the area's past. Together with the quarry, they provide several independent reasons to explore the area's sites beyond the harbor and the Kouros.

Festival traditions are also part of Apollonas's character. A procession with the icon takes place there every year on the eve of the Agios Ioannis festival. Apollonas holds the Fisherman’s Feast annually on June 28. Agios Ioannis, the patron saint of Apollonas, is celebrated on August 29. If you specifically want to attend one of these celebrations, check the dates before your trip.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Apóllon, consider what you want your stay to focus on: a quiet swimming stop, the monumental Kouros statues, archaeological traces, or festival traditions.
