Afion lies on Corfu’s north coast, with views opening out over the sea and the surrounding islands. The views include the Diapontian Islands and the bay of Agios Georgios. From the surrounding hills, the view also stretches out over the sea and towards Kravia, Sikia, Gineka, Mathraki, Othonoi, and Erikoussa. Together, the islands off the coast and the hilly landscape give the village its distinctive setting.

Alleys, Stone Houses, and Early History

Afion is one of Corfu’s oldest villages. Its architecture includes whitewashed stone buildings; narrow streets and alleys are lined with houses covered in bougainvillea. The narrow streets offer a different scale from the views across the hills and sea. The village’s history also reaches far back: excavations at Akri Arilla are considered evidence of Afion’s Neolithic origins. Those interested in the village can therefore find not only a distinctive streetscape but also an archaeological link to its early history.

Porto Timoni: Bays and Walking Path

A path leads from Afion down the peninsula to Porto Timoni, which is described as an ancient harbor. A small traditional church, built into the rock, is also located near Porto Timoni. The two bays are distinct: a corridor of shrubs and bushes separates the smaller, also sandy bay from the larger one. The descent to the bays is described as steep, narrow, and challenging; allow at least 30 minutes on foot. As trail conditions can change, check them before your visit.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Stay

When choosing a holiday apartment, consider whether village life or an active outing is your priority. In Afion, the village stay is shaped by alleys, stone houses, and views of the islands; Porto Timoni, by contrast, involves a walking path described as challenging. If you are traveling with children, take the steepness and minimum duration into account when planning your day together. This way, you can begin your accommodation search with the daily rhythm you want for your stay in mind.

Corfu as a Destination for Culture and Hiking

On Corfu, the Old Town offers its own urban cultural highlight: the Old Town and its two fortresses are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its historic urban fabric is almost entirely preserved; the buildings date from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The Museum of Asian Art in the Old Town houses more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas, and Central Asia. Corfu also offers other landscapes for hiking: in the municipal unit of Achilleion, ancient paths wind through the wooded mountains of Agii Deka, Stavros, and Garouna and are suitable for hiking. These urban and wooded landscapes offer their own highlights within the wider destination of Corfu.
